I can understand an award for sports achievement, but sports personality??? He's got about as much personality as a kipper. I would have given him award as the sportsman with the least personality.

Presumably the BBC or whovever chose him play tennis, or were all the other sportsmen on the shortlist already dead.

Have I missed something? Did he ever do anything to warrant the title of "personality"?

That's what happens when the public are asked to vote, they often don't understand the question or don't know the truth.

The BBC had a similar wrong result in their Britain's Greatest Engineering Achievement vote, when the public voted for the French designed Concorde. They obviously didn't know or understand that of the two competing designs, the six engined British one was dropped in favour of the four engined French design, which was then jointly developed.

I think they mean:

personality noun (FAMOUS PERSON)

Which probably originates in the US variant of the English language.

Everyone I talked to today had the same chuckle over this but all agreed, including myself, that it was well earned. WTG Andy
