plan is to run this on 18650 cells but the motor needs upgrading as it to weak for the waight of this plane but all the new ones have 3 cables on them.

the motor in this only has two and goes to the esc in that yellow box and the other two are for the wing flaps and the rear flapps. no rudder.

this thing is like 10 years old and was forgotten about and left in the loft but is it worth getting it going again as i dont want to buy a new transmitter for it.

It's like an electric bike: The battery, controller all have to match, power-wise. A 4s1P 4-cell 18650 pack will be 14.4v and can supply somewhere between 2 and 5 amps, depending on what cells they are, more if you have the special high power ones. The motor and ESC then need to match that current and voltage.

i doubt it will be worth it then as the esc in it also has the two servos connected to it so will have to go as well.

then there is this.

the batt for it is charging tho so might get one last flight out off it ;)

Would a Hobbyking lipo battery be lighter and able to provide more power for the motor, so you may then have enough power as is ? I think they sell the spares too..

i just cant see how lipo is better than 18650 cells and there not as heavy.
The lipos you'd linked to will discharge at 55amps, not so with your 18650 cells, there just not built for the high discharge rates needed for flight.
When I flew RC planes I'd expect flight times of about 12 minuets per battery, big planes and big batterys or small planes & small batterys but still only 10-15 minuets in the air.
Saying that, if you have spare 18650 cells to play with why not have a go, I've got nothing to lose ;)

That's a 12v pack, so you need 4S lipos or 18650s.

so do you think 4s 18650 3400ma cells will power this ?

I wonder if a 3s lipo would be a usable equivalent.
The advantage of lipo's in this situation is the discharge rate of over 25C, so this 3s 1a should easily manage over 25a discharge.
With a weight of just 79g

Charger

both at just over £13 plus a couple quid for cell monitor and about £6 delivery
Assuming a 3s will do

yes that will work but main problem is the motor as it is not got enough power for the size of this thing and a right pita to get it in the air.

there is a alu fire wall but only for the p51d mk2 and it will not fit on this as just to old.

will also need a new esc servos motor and transmitter so just not worth it.

As it's already scrap so try 4S lipos. That will give 33% more power, which should be enough. I doubt that either the motor or ESC will have a problem with 4S. Worst case, the ECS burns.

the cheapest way to more power may be a bigger diameter prop or a bigger pitch. Its a geared motor so should pull it. But don't overdo it or you will fry the esc.

this is the one for it

I think yours is a 10 x8. but check yourself ..if so an 11 x 8 should give a bit more grunt but pull more amps also.
