Whats the largest front chainring you could match with a 42t rear?

If using 2x or 3x rings then will be dependant on the derailleur, other wise for single ring as big as you dare.

Like wise a rear long cage capable of taking a 42t top end gear and a 31t gearing difference, though you can use a medium cage and a road link will perform the same job.

I have a basic derailleur at the moment, bit of a fiddle to set up. But on a trike you can't have chain line problems! I eventually have gotten it working in all 24 gears so I can use 48:40 and 26:11 :)

I was looking at the Sunrace 11-46 but the Shimano is 30 € cheaper and I don't need the extra 4 teeth having come to grips with the 11-40.

The other night I tested on a 17% street in Hendaye and I can pull away from a standing stop, with a little difficulty, with an 8 tooth difference so a 32:42 bottom gear will work as a granny to get me home.

The Sunrace is black with a red lockring though :(
