To me, part of the charm of riding a bike in the countryside, is the names of villages. That is especially true if you get a chance to ride through unfamiliar territory. Some of the names are so strange that it sounds like someone made them up. Here are a few of my favourites in no particular order.
Twenty. [according to the sign, this village is officially twinned with the moon!]
Claxby Pluckacre.
Swineshead.
Ashby Peurorum.
Tongue End.
Manea.
Burton Pedwardine.
Boothby Graffoe. [The name of this village was at one time used by a comedian]

We also have some interesting local road names.
Water belly Lane.
Belchmire Lane
No Mans Friend.
Goosemuck Lane
and last but not least-Fanny Hands Lane.

Perhaps you would like to tell us your favourites?

Round my way the small old woodlands have some interesting names, Dumpsy Derry, Puplet Wood, Deanbottom Shaw (at the top of it's dene! [valley]), Limekiln Shaw, Rowdown Wood, Frylands Wood, Castlehill Ruffs, Hoppershatch Shaw.

Roads include North Pole Lane and Featherbed Lane, the latter a very ancient droving road which leads south to Fickleshole.

We have Trotters Bottom not far away, and Bladder Wood just down the road.
I must have a look at some Somerset names tomorrow; many curiosities there!
