The symptoms you describe are indeed typical of a faulty or misajusted speed sensor. Given your trouble shooting I think it is most likely a defective sensor so would suggest taking it to your LBS for repair. My wife's Cube had an identical problem the repair cost 80 Euro most of that was...

Don't even think of using levers to put the tyre on, no matter how carefull you are the tube will invariable get pinched and most likely punctured. Almost anyone should be able to put a bicycle trye on with hands only, if available, the use of washing up liguid generously applied to both sides...
