I bought a secondhand carrera vulcan e bike with a e42 fault, and the fault is intermittant ,if i switch the bike on say for a few mins and is stationary the bike is ok then suddenly the e42 starts flashing on the screen,so i turn off then on again and no e42 fault !!! then later fault starts again, sometimes if the bike is moved slightly the fault comes back,im confused as someone stated on a site that it cant be a hall effect as the problem is intermittant,so could it be the cable faulty ???? if so who sells this motor cable ??? please could someone advise me as to the problem.

Check the motor connector under the left side chainstay.

I pulled the cable connector apart and checked the pins and socket and sprayed switch cleaner but problem still persists.

E42 is motor Hall error but as said intimmittent does suggest a wire break issue or connection issue . It doesn't though rule out the wiring on the motor side.
When the fault disappears, wiggle/ move the wiring in various places to see if and when it appears.

i tried wiggling the motor cable but it did not provoke the fault,i also tapped the cable with a piece of wood but still the fault didnt appear, but sometimes if the bike was shook a little then the E42 would flash on the screen

I pulled the cable connector apart and sprayed switch cleaner but the error still persisted...i did wiggle the cable slightly where it enters the hub and heard a slight clicking

I think your right and the motor will have to come apart...i saw on the internet with this suntour motor its a total strip down to get where the pcb is located....i think these motors were never in tended to be repaired but replaced...i learnt you cannot buy parts for this motor anymore which is not fair to those people who bought these bikes.

A cable repair on that motor is not too bad. It's much more tricky on the others, where the cable comes through the axle, but still doable. You can buy motor cable from many sellers on Ebay. You'll have to cut your old connector off the controller side and solder on a standard 9-pin one.

When you say i will have to cut the old connector off at the controller side do you mean a connector inside the battery holder base ??? the wires that enter the controller box go di rect into the controller and embedded in resin

You can only buy motor cables with the Julet 9-pin connector. It's up to you what you do with it, but one thing you can't do is plug it into what you already have, so something has to change.

Hello....I will take on board what you said concerning the Julet 9 pin connector....i have now disconnected the wheel and all electrics from the bike frame. I reconnected the wheel and electrics and spun the wheel and the e42 error started flashing on the display.
