    Cheer up

Paddy took two stuffed dogs to the Antiques Road Show in Dublin. ”Aah!” said the presenter enthusiastically, “This is a very rare set produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers, taxidermists, who operated in London at the turn of the last century. Do you have any idea what they would fetch if...

    Spring thing on carrier

Most of my carriers have had this sort of strong spring thing, which would seem to be just about enough to hold a newspaper. I have never seen them being used. What are they for?

    Day trip to Dublin

I was only there for 8 hours so the report is limited to the City centre. 1 Not many bikes, but nevertheless a steady number in the sense that you could just about always see at least one person on a bike. 2 Everybody wore ordinary clothing, no lycras. 3 Out of what must have been 400 cyclists...

Where is the 2 speed hub motor?

After the early reports in 2013, more in 2014, I expected the market to have a number of two speed motors in 2015

Does anyone know how to identify Shimano Acera derailleurs?

I have damaged my Acera gears and need to get a new one, but, even though it says Acera on it, there is no number such as M360 or RDM360SGSS and other numbers that I find when looking on internet.

    Powerpedals excellent service

Reading about the problems that members experience getting their bikes repaired, I would just like to mention a recent problem that I had with my Tonaro Enduro supplied over 4 years ago by Powerpedals in Devon. Recently, my motor began running very roughly if at all. I emailed Phil at...

    Torque washers

putting the back wheel on my bike. Do the torque washers have their 'ears' pointing towards the sky or the ground? The bike is a Woosh Gale and the torque washers go inside the frame.

    Another new problem

Unfortunately, I left the 'ignition' switched on overnight on my Tonaro Enduro, the following day it would not start. I had all the green lights showing, occasionally the motor would give a kick but not run when I turned the throttle. I put it up on the bike stand and pedalled to use the...

Thoughts on the 11 tooth cog

Here I am stuck in the house with sleet falling outside and I began pondering on the problem with the 11 tooth cog which so often skips. Generally it is thought that it is because the cog is too small and the chain simply does not get sufficient wrap around the cog. But, in my experience, the...

    Inverters

Wanting to charge my battery from the campervan battery, I have looked at inverters. However my charger says input= 240 volts at 1.8 amps i.e. =432 watts The output though is 42 volts at 2 amps= 84 watts. Does this mean that the efficiency of the charger is only 19.4% OR, have I got this wrong...

    Ebike at Ullswater

I recently stayed at the camp site in Glenridding on Ullswater. Those who know this site realise that it is at the top of a very steep hill. I had my Woosh folder in the campervan and used it to run around the village and the sailing club. This is serious rock climbing, fell walking and sailing...

    Mysterious cutting out

Just so that we all know, I traced a mysterious engine cutting out to the front brake cable which had one fractured strand that worked its way up and coiled around the cable between the lead blob and the standing part of the brake. Result was that the brake lever would not go to the Off position...

    Deaf Aids

Has anybody got these? I can go the NHS route and get them for free, or pay up to £2,000 at Specsavers. Are private ones really better than NHS?

    Punctures

Yesterday, my front tyre was flat. Turned out it was the patch on an old puncture had let go. Now if I want to glue my boat, I can get state of the art Epoxy resin glue. For the campervan, Sikkaflex polyurethane glue, but for my bike, I have to rely on an anonymous little tube hopefully labelled...

    The psychological wobble!

Yesterday, I had to ride down a one way street with cars parked both sides, (Google Earth, Western Street, Swansea) A number of cars passed me at about 30mph+ and it was quite worrying. When I heard the next one approaching, I deliberately put in a couple of wobbles. The car slowed right down...

Is it just my imagination, or did people used to whistle a lot more when they worked 50 years ago? (Apologies to the kids!!)

    Road Tax...again

I hear a rumour that they will soon cease to issue the round tax discs because the Police can easily check all the details from the number plate. Would this not also be a good time to rename the Vehicle Excise Duty to Vehicle Pollution Tax?

    Police on bikes

Nowadays, I never see a Police Officer on a bike, although it was quite common years ago. Would it help our cause if Police, CSO's, Traffic Wardens were all issued with and required to use bikes? I imagine the feedback from official sources regarding the inadequacy of our cycling...
