Help! Electric bike on cycle to work scheme

I'd be careful of the replies you receive. I've seen many forums where people are happy to recommend bikes for heavier people with no consideration that those brands may have very low structural weight limits. Whichever bike you are considering go the company site and check the weight limits...

    Question about regen braking

On direct drive hub motors, even entry level models do they have regen when going down hill with the electric circuit live but the motor not being operated if not where does the power generated go? If you lived at the top of a long steep hill and your destination was at the bottom of the hill...

BREXIT the silver lining or lead cosh?

Wow that sounds hugely positive for the UK and I didn't even realise how bad the current situation for the UK was. Very interesting although slightly depressing too.

BREXIT the silver lining or lead cosh?

I must admit I'm unsure how the tax system works completely when you factor in tariffs. I assume if I buy a Chinese e-bike currently from a EU registered business and its shipped from mainland Europe and the sales tax is processed in that country I would assume both that the tariff is paid by...

BREXIT the silver lining or lead cosh?

I personally don't see how it can be done any different in the short term in the transition period. We have been in the EU many decades and it will probably take an equal amount of time to pay back the debts we have built up sadly. Remaining in the EU was unsustainable unless we massively...

BREXIT the silver lining or lead cosh?

Lots of mechanisms you can use to control imports including higher sales tax on items that are mainly imported. One advantage of no tariffs on Chinese bikes is now people can choose those instead of EU assembled bikes and there might be a large price saving meaning our trade deficit slightly...

    Commuter bike build advice

Surely the manufacturer stating the weight limits of the hub is not rubbish it is critical information to make an informed choice. There are a huge number of sellers of replacement gears on ebay and aliexpress some of which with very high sales. Many so called expert sites for hub motors...

    Commuter bike build advice

I was looking at a ebay page that had both models listed with a big banner for direct drive but I can see looking again at pages where only the smaller hub is sold it does say geared. Low weight limits, extremely low torque and the hassle of repairing/replacing gearing I really can't see it as...

    Commuter bike build advice

The small 250W violamart hubs don't appear to be geared so are very low torque, I think you can also use them with a 350W controller which maybe takes them up to 20Nm but still not very powerful. I can see some benefits for lighter riders but those certainly aren't for me they seem a worst...

    Commuter bike build advice

The small violamart hub motors of 250W appear to be direct drive too and have a much lower weight limit of 100kg compared to 200kg for the larger hub. Also only 15Nm torque compared to 45Nm for the larger direct drive hub. If I didn't go for the larger hub I would definitely need a geared hub...

I don't get the dry climate bit, I see no information anywhere that these direct drive motors are more vulnerable to water ingress when I look around the main issue is people with geared hubs replacing those gears and not sealing them properly afterwards causing water ingress. If anything it...

The reviews are independent and from verified purchasers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/urw/Voilamart-500W-Electric-Bicycle-E-Bike-Conversion-Motor-26-Front-Wheel-Thumb-Throttle/product-reviews/21029958722?_itm=223553124225 Generally for these heavier duty direct drive brushless motors reviews seem...

That makes it a much easier upgrade to an e-bike. The high gearing will be a a little less as the smallest cog on a freewheel is probably 14T or possibly 13T where as on your original cassette I'm guessing 11T or 12T.

    Double freewheel motor kits

To be honest as soon as you said brushed motor I lost interest, good spot on that. I would not want a brushed motor on an e-bike. As for the pedal sensor there are videos on youtube showing these motors with a pedal sensor fitted or included. I had thought maybe in the future I might try one on...

    Commuter bike build advice

Reviews for teh violamart kits seem very positive, lots of comments about being well made and great value and being a direct drive brushless motor there aren't many moving parts. I can see the speed controller looks a basic throttle or twist control with a LED indicator for assistance level. For...

    Double freewheel motor kits

Sounds like its get off and walk up the steep hills then if you don't want to burn out the motor especially as its single speed. As for legality I guess you'd have to go back a few years for that when throttles were legal although I would think adding a pedal sensor wouldn't be too difficult...

    Commuter bike build advice

I think those type of kits have a 250W legal mode and 500W unrestricted mode which is selected by joining or not joining some wires that come out of the control box. You could make a secret switch somewhere on the bike to toggle modes I guess. Direct drive hubs are less efficient and heavier but...

    Double freewheel motor kits

Well I can't really defend it as I have no idea of the quality but some of the cheap hub motors available from ebay especially the direct drive models seem very reliable and fit for purpose. This looks like it actually could be quite good and if you used it with a folding bike with small wheels...

    Double freewheel motor kits

Apologies if there is already a thread about these but just wondered if anyone has any experience of these very cheap kits. I'm not planning to buy one but just curious about them. You have two single speed freewheels attached to the same wheel, one rotated by the cyclist and another by the...
