The clutch basically prevents the jokey wheel cage from being pulled forward. It's brilliant at helping to prevent a chain from bouncing and jumping the front sprocket on any bike over rough terrain, it is supposed to make gear selection smoother, and it has the bonus that it will 'almost'...

I've certainly not yet found that the standard Performance line motor runs out of "breath" on steep climbs. I'd run out of breath before the motor does on steep climbs. You still need to be able to cycle past the cut off point to take any advantage of speed, and on a steep climb it isn't going...
