    My Tongxin kit bike

Yes Stuart - I'm happy to admit that is where I got the idea from. Ezee put the motor geared for the Quando into a full size wheel so I just took the one that had been used as the Brompton Nano, in the same size wheel as a Quando, and put that in a full-sized wheel! Of course the point I...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Yes, that's right. It can deliver a decent peak output, but is rated as 180W continuous output so the Aussies would be happy. It is marketed in Australia as a legal option. I know it's not giving more than 15A as I've added a 15A fuse as an extra safeguard, and it hasn't popped! In this...

    Name That Motor

Good point, Jeremy. However if you go to the Tongxin site one of the arty pictures shows a motor with a brushed finish. Also I corresponded with the Austrian chap who I believe CH White get their motors from and he does stock Tongxin motors and controllers.

I see; I hope it was fun while it lasted!

What was the nature of the 'mistreatment'? What should one not do with the motor - was it high torque?

    My Tongxin kit bike

Yes, That's more or less what I received. I didn't order spokes. How was your motor? Did you get it working? Frank

Are cycle lanes a good thing or a bad thing?

I've always had mixed feelings about cycle lanes. I have heard that they were invented by the Nazis in Germany in the thirties and made compulsory, to keep the roads clear of bikes. They were highly unpopular in Britain in the early days because the bicycle riding poor felt they were an...

    Name That Motor

John, I understand from a recent posting on here that CH White uses kits from the Austrian seller, Specialbikes.at. I am fairly certain he uses Tongxin motors, and he does use that battery / carrier arrangement, which I agree looks pretty good. A similar arrangement was used on the Schwinn...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Not quite...but good idea, Jeremy! If you look closely at the top picture on this page with a close-up of the panniers, it is sticking out of the front of the pannier nearest the camera, near where the wires go in to the pannier. It's inside an old black sock which is attached to the pannier...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Thanks, Martin and Jeremy, for your comments! I'm pleased with how it looks. One question - has anyonen spotted where the controller is? Also thanks, Jeremy, for the advice on photos - I was wondering how to do that! I agree completely with your comments on kits and what information...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Thanks everyone for the comments, feedback and questions. I've now taken some pictures of my bike. There are some with panniers, which is how it is when I ride it as an electric, and without, which is how it looks when parked (or when I ride it unpowered as I did yesterday). There is also a...

    NiMH battery recommendations

I need a battery for my Tongxin-powered bike. I am pretty sure it will be NiMH. I need 36V and with a decent capacity - at least 10Ah. Mindful of Jeremy's recent experience, I want something that is good quality and proven. Doing a few searches, the ones that stand out are 1...

It Might Be Legal? But Is It Ethical?

John, I think Scott might be tempted to insist you take up his offer of a refund, for a quiet life! Let's face it, if the bikes were to take several more months to materialise, you would probably get even more impatient! Frank

    My Tongxin kit bike

I tried it out first with some SLAs that were spares which came with my second hand Powabyke. They packed up after about 5 miles use - possibly due to too high current drain - I don't know. As John says, I have now borrowed the 13Ah Lithium from my Wisper (while it is in the shop having its...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Afraid not! I've tried to avoid the 'lunch box and wires' kit-bike look as far as possible. I have two wires which go with the rear brake cable along the underside of the crossbar and round the seat tube. They are then tied together and disappear inside one of my panniers. The wires and...

    My Tongxin kit bike

Thanks Flecc, All I did was copy what Ezee had done with the Torq, which I was able to understand because of your explanation, then stick a few components together, so I think you are being far too kind! The motor has lots of potential but the hard bit, and where Schwinn failed, is to...

    Mail Order - Your Rights

Interesting. It's the brave thing for them to do, to get a good product to market more effectively - and implicitly acknowledges my point that there is a large segment of customers who don't want to buy something like this by mail order! The extra volumes they generate should more than make up...
