The explanation is statistics. The vast majority of new mutated variants are defective and dead ends for the virus. But every once in a while, a virus strikes lucky by mutating in a way that helps it survive and reproduce. A few that do survive thus do not kill their host and reproduce faster...

You have not got it right. 7 countries took part in the 1954 Geneva Conference which agreed on the partition of Vietnam along the 17th parallel. France was pulling out and took no part in the new administrations, North and South. Not only Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia also became independent. The...

since when? you misinterpreted my question. I don't see everything France does as admirable or for altruistic reasons because it's my country. I only posted about them when the context and reasons behind these things were missing or misunderstood. For example, the scallop war, when French...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

I really don't want to start a long thread on the Vietnam war. Before 1945, Vietnam was divided into 3 regions with different administrations. French ruled the South (Cochinchina) as a colony, the North (Tonkin) as a protectorate nominally under control of the Vietnamese King in the middle...

I have a pretty good knowledge of this particular period of history. If I could say honestly, your understanding of this part of world is superficial. There is a book written by Graham Greene on this period, The Quiet American, it was pretty close to describing the role of the USA in kicking the...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

You've got your facts wrong again. The Japanese occupation of Vietnam did not happen or was rather a non-event. France did not pull out of Indochina, the 1940 agreement allowed some 6,000 Japanese troops to station there, that number later was increased to 40,000. That was all. The Japanese...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

you should do a fact check on your version of events. the Geneva 1954 Conference formed the basis of settlements in French Indochina. The South Vietnam government were since totally under American control because France did not have the money to compete with the USA for influence in its former...

I don't get you. Labour gave Tories an alibi? Tories are doing what tories wanted, what had Labour got to do with it?

Any UK PM would have found it hard not to follow Bush into the war in Iraq. Blair happened to be in that chair when the music stopped. He should have told us that fact of life, he gave us the dodgy dossier instead. Still, he could not have continued with Brown pressurising him to hand over and...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

The PFI was a tory creation, John Major started it in 1992*, Blair did not start it, he only continued it. May I remind you that back then 1997, zero interest rate was only an academic subject of discussion. At the end of Gordon Brown's time, public finances were still OK. We have to wait until...

Two PMs are outstanding: John Major and Tony Blair. The rest are pretty poor performers. One thing was true then and will remain true for the foreseeable future though, to gain power, you need to win over middle England. That could not be JC, that's why BJ got elected.

Can you put a number to it? Compare that number to what Gordon Brown and the conservative party inflicted on this country then we can see who are the best PMs in the last 50 years. Sure, we can discuss the subject.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

who's got the short memory? When Blair got elected (1997), national debt was 40.4% of GDP. When he left (2007), national debt was 36.4% Don't even talk about national debt in the Johnson's years. In 1997, public sector debt as % of GDP: 1997/98 – 40.4% of GDP 2007/08 – 36.4% of GDP 2010/11...

admit it... you are worried about the prospect that KS comes good at the next election. For all the time I have been here in the UK, the only time when things actually worked was the Blair years. Now there is a prospect of Blair Version 2, it's a no brainer really.

as I understand, parliament delegated the practical implementation of covid regulations to ministers, so what BJ announced on TV on the 17-DEC-2020 and 18-DEC-2020 can be enforced by police. I am pretty sure that the two police guarding the door of No 10 that day (18-DEC-2020) knew pretty well...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

I disagree. Johnson went on TV the day before and also on the day that the alleged party took place to repeat the government message: do not hold parties and repeated 'this message is vital'. More than 500 covid deaths were reported on that day.
  19. Woosh

    Brexit, for once some facts.

that's not a fair comparison. At last PMQ (01-Dec), BJ avoided to answer a simple question (was it true that you guys had a party last year while the country was in lockdown?) with a simple yes/no not because he does not know the answer but because he knows the consequence if he answered yes...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

it is relevant. You want everything to be reduced to simple yes/no but the job of a PM is more than just looking for simple yes/no answers. Johnson is lazy and inept, the country deserves better. He should go.
