Putin insisted that the Ukrainian army must surrender. That's quite a difference. It seems to me that Putin wanted a war.

it could not have been avoided. I agree with you on most points, especially the futility of wars. However, Putin came to Ukraine and lit the fire and he won't stop. Nobody knows how to stop the war, even Lavrov does not seem to know what Russian policy is. He kept repeating the same message...

that number may well have dwindled over the years, from 32% in 1996 to 11.8% in 2018. My guess it's not just in Russia but all over the world. Votes % Votes % Election Candidate First round Second round Result 1996 Gennady Zyuganov 24,211,686 32.03 30,102,288 40.31 Lost 2000...

China is surrounded by many countries that host USA's weapon systems but they are not constantly in conflict with the West. The idea that Russia without Putin will remain the same enemy of the West is hardly believable.

for reason that economic war is similar to military war, Both sides suffer. Statistically, countries with the bigger production capacity will wear out their opponents and prevail. Just look back at progress in the last 30 years. Sanctions if prolonged will roll back the Russian economy.

I doubt that. The first McDonald's in Moscow opened in 1990. A lot have changed since. Sanctions will put back years of economic progress. I watch Lavrov's interview this morning. He complained about the West filling Ukrainian heads with new ideas, presumably un-Russian, in the last 10 years. If...

I can understand that to some extent. I don't rank the Chinese one party state system higher than greedy capitalism and believe that on the long run though, there will be convergence between East and West.

the Mig29s are a separate issue. What would the Ukrainians do with them? they hardly have any infrastructure left to use them effectively, they will be shot down in no time at all. No fly zone can be achieved by other means like shooting down anything that flies with better surface to air weapons.

it's not the same type of application. The solar sail is aimed at collecting the maximum amount of photons, the beam hits it constantly at a perpendicular angle whereas your laser is aimed fleetingly (about 1-2 seconds) more or less at the nose of a bullet coming at it at 4-10 times the speed of...

that is possible if the incidental energy is absorbed by the target. Most photons aren't absorbed, that why we see things.

I vaguely remember some stuff about surface wave conductance, refraction and reflection as we studied Maxwell's equations in my second year at uni. Essentially, to deflect your laser beam, the missile's surface needs to be coated with a layer of highly conductive material like copper or silver...

I really did not expect that Putin would go that far. He's gone mad and is going to kill a lot of Russians and Ukrainians alike before this is over.

Like the German Barbarossa special operation, Russia can't win this one on the long run. It has an initial advantage but that advantage is reduced by the day. For all intents and purposes, Putin's army is stuck. It did not vanquish the Ukrainian army in the last 12 days, it can't do that now...

fighting against invaders is never pointless, flecc. Not fighting them at all is not a solution. There are millions of Ukrainians who will want to defend their country against 200,000 Russian invaders. We are not in the 16th century when a few Spanish canons conquered an Aztec empire. Within a...

flecc has the advantage of a real and personal experience f world war 2 while most of us were not even born or too young for that. By the time I could notice things, most of the war torn towns have been repaired. Still, we tend to split hair on this thread, the differences between us aren't as...
