Part Charge or Full charge? The Jury's Out!

I put exactly this question to PP and AE last month, they were both of the opinion that it makes very little difference whether the batteries are fully discharged or topped up frequently. The range achievable from the battery during it's useful life will be about the same. All the best David

New 11 speed Shimano Hub Gear

Alfine 11 We have just had an answer from Shimano the samples are not available until August this year, we are going to upgrade our XC tourer to 11 speed Alfine. The retail price is set to be around the £300 mark. As soon as we have one on trial I will report. Best regards David

Real world I think Flecc's figures were real world, my worry is that even Panasonic are saying only 500 charges and then a massive drop over the next 50. In the real world I would expect the figures to be more like Flecc's . I would really love to use a cheaper battery, we would no doubt...

    Fastest climber?

Hi Eddie By the time the cells have been put into a decent case (not the cheap aluminium type) and have a high quality BMS installed, I would think £300 is unlikely unless the cells are the low grade variety available in China. Even the Panasonic cells would make the battery more expensive...

Panasonic are quoting 500 charges so under normal usage your 342 seems more likely Flecc, this is the reason we decided to stick with our tried and tested Li Po. All the best David

    Change in e-bike legislation

Hi Tim The new class for electric bikes is already being explored in Brussels, the Germans already have the S class bikes approved and on the road. It's only a matter of time before there is similar legislation all over Europe. Listening to our customers there will be a big and immediate...

Dump Are you using a 250W motor? If so what does the motor need to have dumped from the battery to run at it's highest efficiency? There is only so much a 250W motor needs to maximise range and power. I would be interested to learn what technology you are using and what the battery...

    Change in e-bike legislation

Tampering What's interesting Tim, is figures from ETRA say that 70% of pedelecs on the road in Europe have been tampered with, I doubt that means they have been made slower! Mass disobedience of a law normally means the law is ill conceived and unenforceable. 20 MPH would be perfect, I...

Electric Guru It's like consulting a oracle! Flecc you should set up in Tibet, dress in yellow robes and have people walk up mountains for days on end to ask a single question! Many thanks, I was disbelieving the results! Kindest regards David

Max power I am certainly still learning about batteries, we have for the last 4 weeks been testing a 37V 17.5A Panasonic celled power pack in NZ, to my astonishment is it being out performed on range and power by our current 36V 14A Li Po battery. Does anyone know why this should...

    Change in e-bike legislation

To BEBA or not to BEBA Hi Scott, thanks for your response, let me take your comments one by one. "That is all well and good but I do not think this body will make the slightest bit of difference. If anything it will be counter productive highlighting points that they probably knew nothing...

    Change in e-bike legislation

Hi Scott, I trust you are keeping well! You are missing the point all together. The UK rules governing electric bicycles are going to be changed whether we like it or not. The consultation document was not blindly put forward by BEBA, it was issued by DfT warning that the regs are about to...

    James May reviews the Gocycle

Have you ridden one They will sell well as they look fantastic, really funky! They will be selling on the second hand market too as people realise they are not as good as they look to ride. You may think I am biased (well I am) but there are many real electric bikes on the market...

Objections If anyone does, please make sure that the objection to removing the throttle is made on grounds of safety and/or to enable an electric bike to be used by people who would have difficulty pedalling normally. All the best David

Slower top speed better hill climbing Hi Andy Just to let you know we are going to be offering a set of gears that will convert a Wisper from high speed to high hill climb ability next month. We will also be offering a set of internal hub motor gears that will reduce hill climbing...

    James May reviews the Gocycle

They wouldn't let me ride one at the Cycle show, they said I was too fat and a wheel may fall off.... which would be bad for publicity! :D Back to the diet! Regards David

    Change in e-bike legislation

Throttle In BEBA's response to the DfT's consultation document, we have made a case for the throttle to be kept in the UK. Although I hold little hope that it will. Wisper bikes sold in main land Europe conforming to the EU regs still sport a throttle which can only be activated (over...
