your picture shows the battery in the unlocked position. You can insert a flat blade where I indicate in the picture, twist the blade to separate the battery from the base. Once it's loosened, the battery will come out quite easily.

if it's a hub bike then yes, if it's a crank drive then you have to be in the right gear all the time to be kind to your bike and keep your cadence high. Crank drive motors give more power if you keep up your cadence. Most people with arthritis would choose a hub bike but it's not a rule.
