    Brexit, for once some facts.

on the other hand, free public provision rarely keeps up standard for long. It makes sense to fund the initial seed investment like British Rail or Water but if they weren't privatised, government after government won't invest enough and when they do, it's usually not good value for money. JC's...

BT shares initially went up 10p (5%) on the news, it drops back a little when the implications are worked out. Still 7p (3%) higher than before the news.

Labour can nationalise BT, market cap. £20 billions, then sell it off minus BT openreach. It would get about £10 billions for BT business minus Openreach, so I reckon BT Openreach could be nationalised for about £10 billions net. to make broadband available to everyone, you are talking about £40...

£500 per household. That's as much as the conservatives want to spend on people who have lost a great deal in the flood. Don't get ill if BJ wins.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Donald Tusk's last word on brexit: I have heard repeatedly from Brexiteers that they wanted to leave the European Union to make the United Kingdom global again, believing that only alone, it can truly be great. You could hear in these voices a longing for the Empire. But the reality is exactly...

Thinking of converting my commuting bike - questions and advice

no, just the opposite. Torque sensored bikes like high cadence. It's much, much easier to climb a hill at over 80 RPM than lower.

    Death of the derailleur?

none, but it's not the point. There are merits in a system that is simple to fit to a wide range of bikes or require zero maintenance. The point about a cadence sensor system (which the Gospade is) is you pedal as much as you like, selecting in the right gear becomes much less important to the...

    Death of the derailleur?

what disadvantage? you could have tried it the last time you were in my workshop, it was the blue road bike on my stand. The motor weighs 2.65kgs, not much more than the crankset it replaces. There is no derailleur, no cable, nothing to adjust, not much exposes the kit to the elements, only an...

    Death of the derailleur?

one of my test bikes has the Sram Automatix and a souped up Gospade crank drive kit. It's very, very lightweight except that the frame costs perhaps a tenner, not so pleasant to ride. It climbs more or less anything around Southend, I can ghost pedal it up a steep hill.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Their way is simple: staying in the EU is best economically, so if we leave, we should have a very soft brexit to minimise the economic impact and cost. you just don't want to see any merit in a soft brexit. JC's problem is that he cannot bring himself to saying that staying is better...

Thinking of converting my commuting bike - questions and advice

That may make sense in some context but impractical in reality. If you start off from 0mph, you will appreciate a burst of acceleration from 0mph. If the power were to increase with the cadence, you would get very little power at startup. Our bikes and kits use Lishui controllers with 5 assist...

Labour can work and concentrate on other issues if the UK leaves the EU or not while the conservatives can only function if we leave.

other parties pay out of their own funds to select their candidates, why did Mr Farage see it necessary to charge a fee? that suggests that Mr Farage sees his candidates as clients and not comrades.

I thought the figure was £1,000 per applicant. Apparently, 3,000 applied to be candidates and Farage said the party does not do refunds.

Help! I don't know what e-bike to buy?!

you work for the NHS, you should enquire about their cycle to work scheme. You don't have to pay anything upfront. Your budget is enough for something like this: it comes with 12AH battery, enough for 35-40 miles.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

their message is clear: no hard brexit! that nobody listens is simply the result of the divisive aspect of any referendum. People are forced into just two tribes. Any party which tries to occupy the middle ground will soon find out to their cost.
