    L1e-A testing requirements

there was a thread about it back in 2016, posted by Helenj I believe: #1 - Pedelecs The Department for Transport has today confirmed to Pedelecs that an ordinary cycle, already ridden on public roads as such and subsequently converted to a ‘twist and go’ electric bike, will not require type...

    Orbea Gain e road bike

excellent review and good point about the maximum heart rate, the Gain reduces your maximum heart rate from 145bpm to 133bpm.

    Throttles allowed?

you mean 1% more mass, 1% less speed. OK, after 5 minutes, you ride 990m instead of 1km. Your elevation is 99m above your starting point. 99m/990m = 10%, not 9%.

Help identifying rear hub motor please

The factory ticks one box to show which voltage the LCD was set to work with. That does not mean you can run at higher than the specified voltage. For example, all the Bafang / King Meter LCDs are made to work only with the specified voltage.

    Throttles allowed?

let's say you climb a 10% gradient for 1km in 5 minutes. Your destination's elevation is 100m higher than your starting altitude. If you carry 1kg extra weight, you'd slow down a little, after 5 minutes, your elevation suffers a little, you are at 99m higher than when you started. What is the...

    Throttles allowed?

that bit is correct, you are supposed to gain approximately 1% extra elevation, not 1% extra gradient.

    Throttles allowed?

dodgy math? if that proposition were true then the reverse 'every kg put on the bike means it can go 1% less steep hill' - put a baby seat and a baby on your bike, would the bike stop going up any hill? The correct statement would be: if your bike can climb 10% then shedding 1kg will make it go...

    Throttles allowed?

my worry is older people who need a good motor to assist them on hill systematically look for a crank drive because they understand the usefulness of the gearing on bikes. However, most of them have a problem with cadence. If they are in their 80s, they can't keep the cadence higher than 60RPM...

Help! Motor running but no power !

to test the clutch, reassemble the motor, re-install the wheel, then turn the wheel backward to engage the clutch. You should hear the cogs and rotor inside the motor moving and feel the resistance. Turning the wheel forward disengages the clutch and the wheel should spin freely. It seems to me...

    Throttles allowed?

I wish that all the suppliers give their torque figure as at the wheel. Numbers like 80NM, 100NM, 120NM etc are misleading to the non-specialists. How many bikes have a rear cog same size compared to the chainring?

    Carbon frame rear hub kit?

it's not the power that will crack the shell, it's the weight - inertia is a huge force when you hit a pothole.

    Carbon frame rear hub kit?

you need to sort out where you want to mount the heavy battery first and is there any special reason to go for a heavy lump of a direct drive motor?

Help! Motor running but no power !

if the motor turns then there may a problem with the internal gearbox. Have you contacted the supplier for support?

I went to see the guys at ARM Holdings a few times in the early days when they developed UK's first 32-bit RISC. I was one of the beta testers. Always thought that Cambridge people do, Oxford people talk.
