it's a good parallel though. When a product becomes comoditised, the big boys will get the volume discount and free delivery, the smaller guys have to get out of the way to survive. I reckon we lose 6% of bike shops year on year just because of online purchases. If anyone reading this and...

I tell you a story. Last Thursday, I had to get a license for Windows 2016 Essentials for one of my customers (I sell PC stuff besides e-bikes), my buy price is £235 + delivery + VAT, PC World sells it for £262 + VAT. It is just not worth my time ordering and billing customers for £20 profit...

I receive containers every month. Some of them have long trailers, they can't turn easily. By having smaller trailers following a leader, that problem is solved. The likes of Uber will exploit the technology for their financial gain but the customers will be the main beneficiaries of advances in AI.

Yes and no, Rob. I have thought about selling through the bike shops many times but to me, it is just too risky to do so. Just imagine the mess if anti dumping is put on Chinese e-bikes. I much prefer keeping a bit of headroom on price through the turbulent time.

We talk regularly with local bike shops, as a few of our customers live alone or too weak to take the bike out of its carton. The bike shop then sends somebody over. They take the bike out, set it up and check it for a small fee then continue to look after the customers. There is no conflict of...

are we talking about closures of local bike shops? last year, apparently 10% of bikeshops closed. The number is high and uncomfortable but why is it up to the users to keep those unprofitable shops open? I know some of my local shops where salesmen have little to do in the week except Saturdays...

so your opposition to driverless taxis is not that taxis are not public support but about cost? If so, removing the driver makes economic sense.

What's wrong with moving on with the new hi-tech online age? You may know already that the taxman takes roughly 45% of any profit made by a UK company. Would you consider also the tax aspect of keeping unprofitable branches when virtually nobody will carry cash in a generation? And there are...

why do you expect people to 'support the local shop as fully as they could'? Is it so bad form to try to save £200-£400 on the upfront cost of a bike?

if you can't wait for the bus, what then? Taxis are shared transport. More people will use it in place of buses if it's cheaper. Driverless taxis can reduce the size, weight and operating cost. More availability can also reduce the non-productive portion of their mileage.

I suspect we will never agree on this. I believe buying online and have your bike looked after by your LBS is a great combination.

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

I believe best motor for commuting in terms of reliability and reducing overall maintenance cost is the front geared hub used in combination with a rear IGH, battery behind seat post. However, most commuters prefer the middle and rear geared hubs, battery on seat post for better ride quality.

that's a nicer bike than the Norco Indie 4. I only have 15AH (550WH) in rear rack battery at the moment. FYI, the XF08C can be supplied with rear rack and 15AH battery for £575.
