    Conversion costs

I've owned my bicycle for roughly 30 years, I bought it 2nd hand when I was at university at age ~21. For most of that time it had cantilever brakes. It's now got v brakes. Due to some miracle I've never fallen off the bike, not once. I've not been run over by a car, bus, lorry. Never lost...

    Protecting your ebike investment

I'm sure this has been discussed many times before but I'm not above repeating the same old discussions. Ebikes are generally not cheap, and if they are cheap then generally there is a good reason. All bikes are easy to steal and getting your bike back is very hard. The police are not...

    Conversion costs

I agree. My tin donkey has rim brakes and whist I would be happier with disc brakes, rim brakes work adequately for me. I would not buy a new bike with rim brakes, but I'm not going to ditch my exiting, perfectly functional bike with rim brakes. I often hit speeds of up to ~24 mph on downhill...

    Help! Help buying first ebike

If I had your sort of money for a bike I'd be happy with a Bosch or similar. I do indeed have the money tbh, but I leave my bike outside of pubs late at night (ok, it's a country pub, not a town pub), outside supermarkets, in caving huts etc. So my main concern would be some scroat stealing it...

Help! PSW conversion kit on Carrera Subway 2?

My bike is a ~30 year old Claud Butler MTB. I upgraded to vee brakes from cantilever.... However, you may find that so much is worn out on your bike that getting something newer would be more cost effective. I have a tsdz2 mid drive and thought I might source a newer bike at some point and move...

    Ebike newbie

Not sure I push my tsdz2 very hard. In stock firmware I'm in assist level 2 all the time. No way of knowing if it's overheating without faff but I think unlikely. I have considered osf, not to get more power out of the motor, just because I find you need to slow cadence down to get the most...

Are motor cut-off brakes legally required?

I I completely agree, I see no value on fitting brake sensors on my TSDZ2 bike. Blue gear is showing no noticeable sign of wear after 1000 miles.

Review Tong Sheng TSDZ2 Owner Survey

It's impossible to say how long the kit will last but realistically I expect to get about 3 years out of it and >3000 miles. If I achieve this then it's a win. Les than this and I might feel it wasn't a best buy. I'm quite happy to replace bearings and the like and these are very cheap...

Review Tong Sheng TSDZ2 Owner Survey

About ~1000 miles on motor. Getting noisy and rough so stripped down. Very damp inside. The fault was easy to find, the central bearing on the gear reduction shaft was shot. A couple of pounds for a replacement and running fine again. Blue gear is fine. Took the opportunity to use RRG to improve...

    Titanium wrist electric shock risk?

An unprovocted personal attack on a stranger on the internet doesn't make you look big, quite the opposite. It was stated "However, in reality, ~50v is unlikely to be fatal in most scenarios". I think that statement is clear and correct and states the real world risk is low. Maybe you should...

    Titanium wrist electric shock risk?

I'm no expert but my layperson's opinion for what it's worth... I doubt an internal metal plate makes any difference to risk. You are a big fatty wet saline infused bag - and that's not intended as an insult. In a worse case scenario 12vdc may be enough to kill you - hot sweaty body and contact...

    Some advice needed please...

Hmm, 6mm of shims is a lot - guessing the chainstays must be quite wide. I concur that a double chainring feels like an unlikely option. You may find you can hit all the gears with the dished chainring at a stretch. All is not lost, the 42t dished chainring will get you up steep hills with an 8...

    Some advice needed please...

I have got a new FD now but neglected to buy the small chainring. However, I am confident it will all work. I bought a FD with a larger diameter band and 3d printed an eccentric insert that offsets the derailleur to the right by 3mm. I 'think' that the extra 3mm is going to be needed with the...

A trailer for ebike or non ebike towing.

Part way through modification: And a few more: Need to varnish the tail gate. The cover and tailgate are quick to remove, although I'll get some quick release pins for the cover instead of nuts and bolts. Everything folds quite flat and the wheels are quick release. There is enough...

    ebike insurance for conversions

That's a useful article. I have 3rd party insurance with cycling UK and I didn't check coverage but it certainly isn't a listed exception. Always difficult with insurance companies and I may contact the insurance company directly. My guess is that the cycling UK cover erd does cover converted...

    Some advice needed please...

I still only have one chainring as waiting for parts. However, it is a flat chainring on the inner position and I can acces all 7 of the rear sprockets. The largest is a bit of a stretch but I think I can improve it a bit by removing a 2mm BB spacer I think is unnecessary. I'll have 12-32t on...

A trailer for ebike or non ebike towing.

It's a lot of fun, was in OFD at the weekend and it's such a great cave. I don't do much SRT being predominantly a Mendip caver but I'd be quite grumpy if all my SRT kit went walkabout. That's a bum deal to do a good deed on a rescue and loose all your kit - and it's not cheap, especially now...

A trailer for ebike or non ebike towing.

Looks like it could be the basis for a good lightweight cargo trailer. It's old but in very good condition. Will have to think how to convert but it should be an easy job.

    Some advice needed please...

The 42t flat chainring allows me to access the 7 sprockets when on the inside position of the spider. The lowest gear is a bit of a stretch but I think I can remove a 2mm spacer and improve the chainline a bit. Not tried on the outside but I suspect the lowest one or two sprockets will not work...
