Hi,

My first post here, so be gentle lol.

I am trying to replace the display on my sons 2024 Carrera Vulcan E (water ingress and wont turn on now). It is a newer model with the Bafang battery integrated into the frame.

Battery is fine, I get 42v on the pins at the battery and the again on two of the pins at the display connector, it just won't turn on when pressing the button on the display now, assume given the water ingress.

It has a Bafang G020, 250w rear hub motor and the display has a semi-triangular connector. The display has DP C221 CAN 1.0 written on the back - Which I assume means it's on a CAN protocol.

The trouble is all the displays I see online seem to relate to mid-drive motors, not hub motors and I don't think the two are compatible.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

You've told us everything except which display it is.

The advertisers may just be listing those motors it's more commonly used with rather than showing everything it's compatible with. Bafang themselves don't seem to limit this display only to their mid-drive motors. You could email them and ask. But the first thing to do would be to fully dry out the one you already have and try it again.

If you take a look at the pics in this link... They specifically place a cross through the hub motor and tick the mid-motor. Which is what is concerning me...

If you look at the reviews, the first one is from UK and says, "Works with my Bafang rear motor".
Ah-ha... Would be useful if I had checked that... Thank you... Will give that one a go, as least I can return Amazon items easily.

So... The Varstrom EKD01 Display does seem to work with the 2024 Carrera Vulcan (with in frame battery), which is normally advertised for mid-motors only. This is likely because the bike operates on the CAN protocol. I have battery percentage, speed (reported by the rear hub motor sensor) and whole host of other settings, including bluetooth.

The downside is that it seems that the Bafang bottom bracket with integrated PAS may have failed, as I can get the motor to power in "walk mode" up to 5kph by holding the "-" button, but am not getting anything from the motor at all when peddling in any assistance level (1-3).

I have this exact bike in which I recently upgraded the original DP C221 Display with the Varstrom EKD01 and it works absolutely flawless, especially the navigation side of it when connected to Bluetooth.

The PAS is actually a Torque Sensor so as you put weight on the pedals it wants to go, it doesnt see the pedals spinning only the torque you put into it. There are some replacements on ebay used to new from around £15 used to £60+ new. The EKD01 makes it go 20mph whereas the original display limits it to 16.1mph.
