A friend wishes to replace the broken handlebar switch on her Orbea Ebike. The Mahle switch shown in the pic is an exorbitant £80. Is there an alternative please?.

Probably not, though the pic would help, its possible its sold as a generic switch under a different 'name'?

Some brands might cheap out and just fit hard to source connectors on generic parts, they pull every other trick they can get away with in the name of brand protection.

It's special to Mahle. Some versions have CANbus.

This is the issue with proprietary bike systems , they are bespoke and non generic.

And yet - this is the way the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill 2025 seems to be driving things.

I note that reading the bill as it is right now, product standards which will be compulsory, are to be specified in what are called 'Statutory Instruments'. That means a minister, or appropriate person will just make announcements of what they are to be.
