Question about tyres

I have a Kalkhoff Pro Connect Impulse 10, bought in June last year. The tyres are Scwalbe Marathons, 28 x 1.50, (40x622) and the rims just say 'Concept' - I *think* they are Shuemann Concept SDR light rims, as the Kalkhoff website for the 2015 model mentions Concept SDR. If I read the Shuemann web site correctly, these are 19mm internal width.

The tyres are road tyres I know, but since getting the ebike my enthusiasm for cycling has increased and I'd like to ride some of the easier unmade tracks and country path trails round here (just north of Havant). I'm not talking steep or rutted, just rough and a bit stony. I've done this but I would feel more secure I think on slightly wider tyres with a more pronounced tread. I find the whole rim and tyre business a bit confusing! Looking at the Scwalbe web site, they do a Marathon Mondial which is ebike ready, and which says it's good for road, track and trail, and it does look like it has a more suitable tread pattern. With the rims I have, would I be able to use say, a 28x2.00 size of this tyre on the Concept SDR rims? That's assuming they would fit inside the mudguards and back fork. It looks to me like I have the room.

ETRTO size 622x40 is 700c x 38c

28" is a touring bike thing for 700c x what ever the tire is to give a nominal 28" outside diameter in the same way 29er mtbs use the same rim with a fatter tire and have a 29" nominal OD .....

So what you have is a regular 700c rim or put another way for mtb tires 29"

when it comes to tires - you are limited by the clearance in your frame and mudguards .

For a knobbly tire of a similar size try the WTB nanos they come in 700x40 and should fit on your current rim. The risk of sticking on a 2inch tire is if you have a narrow rim they could be squirmy and prone to pinch flats at low pressures- but equally they could work. Physically they will fit on the rim - your limiting factor is frame clearance.

Also look at Cyclocross tyres to give you the tread patern but avoid anything ultra light as you will be pinch flatting all over.

I did a few km on gravel with my Big Bens the other day. Didn't enjoy it, reminded me of all those crashes I had as a kid in NZ where you had to ride 7 km before getting to a sealed road...

The Mondial in 47-622 should be just fine for your use, well spotted.

There's a lot of tolerance on the width of tyres. You should be able to use just about anything from 1 1/4" to 2". Its the 622 that's important. make sure that your new tyre has that written on it because there's different sizes for 28" - daft as it may seem.

Just back from the LBS the lady has just ordered a set of Mondials for a client who wants to do just what you do. She said as they are a new 2016 tyre they aren't cheap.

Here is the fitting information: http://www.schwalbe.com/en/reifenmasse.html

As your bike has a 40-622 a 50-662 should fit on that rim.
