  1. And believe me, having now lived with belt drive for two years, he'd give up his bike if he had to do that.
  2. My current Gazelle has a Nexus 5 and a rear disc brake
  3. Blimey! Glad I asked. OK then... would there be any reason to go for a Nexus rather than an Alfine when my primary consideration would be best reliability on an e-bike with a 75Nm motor and longest life?
  4. I'm wondering about getting the 5-speed Nexus rear hub of my Gazelle e-bike (belt drive, disc brake) swapped for a 7 or 8-speed one. And I have questions ... 1. Assuming I could find somebody to do it (rear wheel there and back by courier), could anybody take a guess at a likely sort of cost including the new shifter? 2. Would I inevitably need a new cable (which is routed through the frame), or perhaps just a new inner? 3. Is the Alfine a replacement for the Nexus, or what? 4. Anyone you would recommend to do the job ? Reasons for contemplating this: advanced age, emphysema and some long steep hills in this neck of the wood ...
  5. Good point. Thank you.
  6. Here's a picture of my Nexus 5 hub after being put back together as per advice received here, YT videos and the snaps I took whilst taking it all apart. T'other end of the axle is clamped in the vice. Wheel turns freely clockwise but not anticlock. Have I cocked up or do I need another coffee?
  7. Sorry chaps, but the guts of my hub have now been soaking in ATF for most of the day (with occasional agitation) and the plan is to let it drip off overnight so I can reassemble tomorrow. In anticipation of this I've been checking online the oiling procedure and I'm a bit puzzled by one aspect of it. What seems to be the best YT video shows the oiling done in a special Shimano pot, which is filled up to a depth of 95mm before the internals are dunked therein for 90 seconds. That depth of oil in that pot seems to soak it just about up to the bottom of the small planet gears that protrude outside the body. So the plan is to simply plonk my hub internals in my tub drive-end uppermost and fill it so the oil comes up to that same level. Any ideas why the level is seemingly so critical? And why that specific 90 seconds?
  8. Right. Success. The problem was the word "tap", plus the fact that I served my time as a toolmaker, therefore I still have an aversion to using brute force when logic says it shouldn't be needed . However, in the end I reached the "sod it" point and resorted to a fair old whack with the rawhide end of a size 3 copper and rawhide mallet, whereupon I achieved the objective. Quite why it needed that much persuasion I have no idea, but I'm past caring. Thank you to one and all for your help with this
  9. It's a thought, but it's not the axle that needs to come out - it's pretty much the complete contents of the hub. There are videos of the process on YT, but as is often the case, none of them show the brake side of a Nexus IGH that has the disc retained by the "nut" that's removed by a cassette lockring tool (as opposed to the disc being attached by bolts which just unscrew).
  10. Sorry if i'm being really dumb here, but in your first reply on this thread, you said I take everything off the other end (i.e. the brake side) then push the guts through, which I assumed meant I push from the drive side. I can't take everything off the brake side, because I can't see where I go from the picture in my last post in order to do just that! So I'm stuck. I guess I remove the "washer" through which the balls are visible then lift the race out. But how does that "washer" come out?
  11. Aaaaargh ,,, So I got the disc off and removed the flanged nut, leaving things as in the photo. Can't find anything helpful online, so how on earth do I proceed now?
  12. Gosh, isn't it easy when you know what you're doing ... Thank you
  13. I'm finally recovered enough to make a start on dismantling my rear hub in order to oil/grease it, and I've already hit a snag with which neither Google nor the data sheet is much help. I've got as far with the (belt) drive side as in the picture. It's not obvious to me how those two lugs protruding above the slots fit into the scheme of things, so I'm unsure of how I proceed from here. I'm rather hoping somebody can tell me please ...
  14. Thanks neath. ATF plus oil and grease now on order from Amazon.
  15. I'm going to have to do the lubrication of my Nexus 5 hub internals in the kitchen, which is obviously a bit of a domestic minefield. What's my best bet for cleaning off the existing grease and oil? I can do that outdoors, so something in a squirty can that I can spray on and work in with a paintbrush perhaps? Unfortunately whatever I use has to be obtainable from Amazon.
  16. Thanks chaps. I'm sorted now re lubricants but stuck for a suitable cleaner so I've started a new thread ...
  17. Thanks, but the kosher Shimano stuffs half the price!
  18. Thanks, but as I said I really need something that's available from Amazon.
  19. I'm just about recovered enough to start getting my act together to service my Nexus 5-speed hub, so ... do I really need to use genuine Shimano oil and grease? If not, what should I be using instead? No bike shops hereabouts and postal delivery is crap, so preferably something I can get from Amazon!
  20. Thank you very much indeed for your help, nealh. Probably going to be Sat or Sun before I get to look into this further, but I'll be sure to report back in due course ...
  21. It's not the cable. The arm to which the cable attaches at the hub isn't moving back anti-clockwise after an upward gearchange without a good poke on the end of it. I guess sorting this out isn't possibly a DIY job?
