Gadget show Earls court thoughts

Came back from the show and nearly tested all the bikes out

The German bikes Bosch drive motor performance blow me away. Even the test track is quite small but they can deliver an instant power.

However, I am a bit disappointed about the grace bike. It seems I need to put a lot of pedal power to ride smoothly. The guy told me this bike is not a good bike for hills as the bionix motor gets overheat quite easily.

Good to know that guy is being so honest about this. But is that true?

Overheat, no that's unlikely, but the BionX is a direct drive motor, a type which are less suited to economical but effective hill climbing. They climb reasonably well on the maximum power level 4, but that's so greedy of current that the range is drastically shortened.

BionX are introducing a new model next year, the Bosch new model is already with us and is certainly one of the best e-bike motors at present.

It's a shame it drives the wrong part of the bike. Best for what? I prefer the Bionx as a boat anchor.

Thanks Flecc.

Just realised Bionx motor is direct drive and that could explain why I felt I need to pedal harder to move the bike forward.

I like the Bosch system but I wish I can get the kit that fits the bike I want :D

Yes, that's the problem with the most sophisticated crank drives, they integrate the bottom bracket.

That's difficult to avoid when providing for a quality torque sensor and the integration of a tiny geared up chainwheel as Bosch have done.

Hi Pat, I remember talking to you, thanks for coming along.

It is true that Bionex have problems with overheating, so I was told! Indeed I have heard that the "Mountain" Setting for use in very hilly areas, actually reduces the power output to try and resolve the problem.

However..... the Grace Easy in the track area wasn't for test riding as it was virtually out of battery, and due to a complete cock up by yours truly, I did not have the correct charger. I had bought along the charger for my Smart Bike in error!

I should point out that I use the Grace Easy as my current bike of choice almost daily and for the roads around Sevenoaks it is a fantastic bike, we have hills but mainly way under 15% and I have never had an over heating problem. I should also say that as soon as I can get my hands on my own Charger, I will change bikes! The Grace Easy is a good bike for shorter distances, My Wisper 905Classic is still the bike I use for longer distances and £ for £ IMO is still the best bike in our now quite extensive range. Not as nimble as the near silent Easy but smooth, quiet with a huge range.

I know, I am absolutely spoiled for choice, but I should also say that I use my MX for off roading!

All the best

Hi David,

Thank you for your support from the show. It was a very nice test ride for me and I was very pleased with the bikes I tried. Sorry I used up the battery juice your Grace easy :p

It is a shame I could not try the MX as it is the best looking bike.

Anyway, my 805fe is going strong. Good to know all wisper bikes are now made in Germany :D
