Sram Ex1 cheaper replacement cassette alternatives?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had my Scott Escale 2017 700 plus 8 speed Emtb with Bosch CX performance motor for just over 5yrs and no complaints apart from the cost to replace the rear cassette, I get approx 2000 miles per cassette which is about 1yrs riding, cassette, chain and sprocket usually costs me around £350. This year I tried replacing the chain early at about 0.5 on the stretch gauge but the sprockets were too far gone so put the the old chain back until its unrideable which probably will be just a few weeks, I also need to replace the free hub as the smallest cog is slipping on the splines.

I know the Ex1 has been discussed before with regards to cheaper alternatives and I have read through some previous posts but I'm not really any wiser and my lbs don't have any experience of these cassettes.

Has any one successfully changed from Ex1 cassette on their Emtb, I would appreciate any advice if it's doable and what components and set up changes would be needed, thanks in advance.

If Shimano fits, you could look at M5100 11 speed. Shifter and derailleur about £30 each, cassette often seen at £49.99 on offer, SRAM chain is cheapest option, I buy multiple cheap 114 link chains and use one for the extra links needed. Four chains will give three long enough chains for about £50, and if changed in time should get way more than 2000 miles out of the cassette.

Depending on your front chainring cost, could be under £150 per year, and bonus the extra range of a 51T low gear.

eh, you say its a 8 speed cassette ? These are cheap, sub £25 fpor a shimano/sram or sunrace one...cheap chains too...what am I missing here , £350???

I've tried putting standard 8 speed cassette on they fit on the hub but the chain doesn't run properly guess it's the sprocket spacings not being the same which why I was hoping someone has already replaced their Ex1.on their Emtb.

My recent move to 11 speed is for the summer half of the year. Come autumn I'll put the old, cheaper 9 speed back on.

I have to swap derailleur, shifter, cassette and chain as a set. If you want to run cheaper components that's what you need to do. They are designed to work together, so they will.
