New ebike advice required

Featured Replies

Starting back out commuting to work and have a decent work offer to reduce the cost of the bike so makes more expensive (to me) ones viable. Have a city commute of around 5 miles with only about 300 ft along its route, but plan on using the bike for longer runs at the weekends.

Currently looking at the a choice of 3 being;

Carrera Crossfuse Mens Electric Hybrid - Shimano EP6 DU-EP600, mid-drive, 250w, 85Nm

EBCO Adventure 3 Roadster -Bafang M200 Mid Motor

Boardman ADV 8.9E Mens Adventure Electric Bike, 11/12 Speed -Fazua Mid Drive motor

Any advice would be welcomed as not sure what to consider.

How heavy are you?

Try to avoid proprietary systems.

Have you got somewhere secure to park it while at work, otherwise it's going to get nicked. Can you tell me which city - I'm looking for a new bike, but I only had enough money for a used angle-grinder from Cashconverters?

dont worry plenty security where its parked and a very strict access requirement.

Around 75kg

You can get any one you want then. They all have enough power for 75kg and they all do 15 mph max. You don't need any fancy gears on an electric bike, nor any of the other things that make an unpowered bike good. The Argos ebikes are fine for a 5 mile commute and generally riding around on.

If you want power at a higher speed than that, find out if it's possible before buying..

The other alternatives would be to get a cheaper hub motored bike that would be easy to maintain, replace parts, upgrade, (usually would be able to set the max assist speed yourself) , convert a bike yourself (plenty of advice here) or look at offerings from Wisper or Woosh, they have been going a long time and offer very good customer service and support, even after the guarantee period. So, for instance, you would be able to get a replacement battery after a few years of use

For commuting / roads and light trails I tend to use my (kit) rear hub motored bike and save my mid motored (kit) bike for more adventurous off roading. I find the hub motor a more relaxing ride, but I have not tried a "shop bought" mid drive

Your commute needs nothing special, anything will do. What leisure riding do you plan?

The Fazua is a weak assist for riders who want to work quite hard.

The Shimano is third generation, so should have learned from the E8000 issues when used hard off-road. My E5000 is approaching 20,000 mostly on road miles, with no issues.

Don't know the Bafang.

They're all credible, well liked choices.

Seeing as they're all supplied by Halfords, why don't you avail yourself of their try-before-you-buy test rides and, on the basis you'll likely be buying one of the three, see which one you prefer most?
