Hi, got to change my front ring as it's slipping, thought I would be able to slip it over the spider but looks like I have to remove it completely. Here's where the trouble starts. I can't get the crank off, I've got the removal tool but it won't budge and worried about damaging the threads. Has anyone else had this terrible? Any hints.
Cheers

as above you will need a crank puller about £12 off ebay or LBS.
The spider is held on by a 36mm nut.
Very important to note it is a LEFT HAND THREAD

without that bit on the end it will not make contact with the crank thus why it wont move.

It did butt up against the square taper, so do I need the end bit? Maybe I need a new one because the end bit, if there was one, is long gone

Just ordered a new park tools one. Maybe without the revolving bit on the end there's too much friction. Will update tomorrow when it arrives.

New puller works like a charm but none of my 36mm sockets are slim enough to extract the nut. Is there a special tool or socket I need?

Well I'm pleased to say that the thin wall socket from Amazon in the link above works a treat. Better option than the spider tool I saw online for £40
