This is true for a wheel with a hub motor laced into it, since it gives improved torque and lets the motor operate in it's efficient zone more quickly from a standstill. Otherwise known as 'gearing down'.

I usually favour a DIY solution and totally understand your sentiment, but you might be unaware that a 12 fet controller can be bought for around £16.

Although i imagine this approach did work, it seems somewhat daft. If you doubled the volume of the controller, you might as well just have upgraded to a larger controller to begin with, i.e. from a 6-fet to 12-fet.
