    Cheap e-bike? £600?

Those links seem to be going to the US Yose site. The kit at the top already includes a battery and it has a built in controller so not suitable for use with your battery. However I have to say it looks like a powerful geared hub motor with 67Nm peak torque. If you could find the same wheel and...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

I think Yose batteries have a good reputation but they are a trading house mainly I think rebranding products manufactured by other companies. My Hailong battery packs (not Yose) appear to be extremely similar. I think mine are also the exact same 624Wh capacity and mine uses the Samsung cells...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

I think the end torque figure is what you need to go by, I think everyone pretty much knows how geared hub motors work by providing extra torque but at a lower speed and thats fine which is why direct drive motors are so large they provide their torque by being physically larger than geared hubs...

    Voodoo Banshee 29er Conversion

I admit I haven't looked at current prices but I would guess an entry level mid-drive motor would be about £600 including battery but a rear hub motor with battery around £400. So there is a 50% premium on top for mid-drive. There are probably better people on this forum to advise on where to...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

Well the battery spec isn't clear on what this battery outputs on that ebay listing but does clearly state compatible with 1000W 48V motors and personally I have no reason to think that is wrong. I don't think these controllers peak at anywhere near what you think they peak at. These 1000W kits...

    Voodoo Banshee 29er Conversion

I'm a big fan of hub motors but if you are using the bike off-road as it was intended mid-drive is the right choice for such a bike. If you really don't do proper off-roading and just like the style of mountain bike and its really used as a road bike and light off-road use then yes a rear hub...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

I don't think its fair to generalise like that, I've seen cheap 24V ebikes with tiny geared hubs and even with the small wheels the motors are only producing a peak of around 12-15Nm, some of the direct drive hub motors are delivering maybe 30Nm in restricted mode 250W(400W peak) and 40Nm in...

    Riverside 500 motor issue

How much has it changed since you bought it, was it originally seamless and now abrupt. Have you updated the firmware or done anything to it electrically?

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

Not legal of course but don't quite understand the other 2 points why would it not be suitable for the intended use and why would the battery not be suitable. That kit isn't going to need 30A continuous that sounds more like peak figures, 1000W shared by 48V is about 20A but these kits...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

Well you got a brilliant deal on that battery then but it does restrict you somewhat. Anyway which bike are you aiming to get or are you basing it on the most suitable ebike kit? If you are buying a cheap new bike then its probably freewheel based anyway. Despite that kit saying includes...

    Riverside 500 motor issue

Are you sure that isn't normal, 15mph is the assistance limit. Maybe you bought it unrestricted and somehow it has resetted to normal behaviour. I don't think the warranty is transferable. It's definitely the actual Riverside 500e ebike model rather than a Riverside 500 which is a normal bike...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

Is it definitely new? I see battery packs for sale occasionally in my area and they may look newish from the advert but many people sell battery packs after they have done 100s of charge cycles and capacity starts to drop. I remember reading a thread somewhere possibly this forum but not sure...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

As far as I understand it controllers are DC to DC converters with speed being voltage and current being torque so when you hit a hill voltage drops but current surges in the controller to give a torque boost but at a slower speed. I understand your point about specially wound torque optimised...

EBMA files an anti dumping complaint on chinese e-bikes.

Interesting, I think Giant has assembly plants in Hungary, Netherlands and possibly Poland in the EU. I seem to remember in the past I read something that Giant were subsidising the entry level price of their Contend model because they felt it was important to be available at that price point...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

It's a confusing Decathlon bike, it seems to have hybrid style short travel forks but it has mountain bike tyres and the crankset looks pretty cheap as do the pedals. Almost like its a mix of different bike components. The frame looks like a Riverside model especially as its paired with short...

    Cheap e-bike? £600?

I don't think that bike was originally £550 and certainly wasn't bought from Halfords. A problematic ebike kit is not worth spending that money on, the battery, motor or controller could be faulty and it could be an easy fix the cadence sensor maybe or a very expensive fix like a failing battery...

converting to non suspension front forks

To be honest that is my experience too but don't like to assume replacing front suspension with rigid forks will be fine as I don't want people to have issues that I have caused but I feel with a bit of common sense you can tell if it will be ok. On a lot of cheaper bikes they just throw on...

converting to non suspension front forks

Quite a lot of options at that site. I'm certainly not saying its not an issue but hybrid type bikes tend to have short travel suspension forks so geometry is less of an issue. Looking at the bike it looks like its raised with a suspension fork and returns to a level geometry when the fork is...

converting to non suspension front forks

While a chromoly fork would be nice I don't think it has to be, there is nothing wrong with high tensile steel forks and can be stronger with stronger dropouts. Before the advent of CF forks most entry level road bikes had high tensile steel forks without issue and those cheap entry level rigid...

Hybrid with internal gear hub: mid-drive or front hub kit?

Nexus 8 is definitely more reliable than the Nexus 7, the Nexus 7 is actually a 9 speed hub with 2 gears mapped out that you cannot use. Also the Nexus 8 has a direct drive gear which is number 5 and using this gear reduces wear on the mechanism. I have a Nexus 8 in my Subway 8 bike but I...
