Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

I can sustain 105 rpm for about 30 km, I haven't tried longer distances on the flat in quite a while. Any cadence below 90 I feel there is something wrong - either with me or with the gear I am in. Climbing very steep gradients I get down to about 60 rpm.

How to get the best from your battery

Here it is usually quite temperate so I had never experienced that until a "beast from the east" episode last winter - you can lose 33% (!) of capacity as I experienced.

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

    1. the manufacturer could modify the internal gearing, this was done recently with the Bafang G310 hub which has high first stage rpm and 11:1 reduction final. There is no reason not to apply the same to a mid motor 2. https://www.bafang-e.com/en/oem-area/components/component/motor/mm-g30200c/...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

My "only human input" is between 160-200W so I tend to notice wrong gearing more than someone putting in less effort I guess. Even at 100W human input being in the correct gear with a hub motor will extend battery range by a significant amount. I have stalled my mid motor once in bottom gear...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

From personal experience about 100 rpm on a 36v GSM mid motor. I don't have back EMF at 42v and above.

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

Within the legal limit (25 km/h) of assistance about 100W is needed to power a racing bike on the flat. This is a graph for a 5% gradient, the kind of hill most people have to negotiate on the road, and that requires about 420W. I have managed to sustain 25 km/h on a 9% hill on a hub motor...

    Number Two

I only tow on the road but I may 3D print mudguards in the future. When choosing a printer, large print volume was a deciding factor so a mudguard printed in two parts that snap together is on the cards! The box will be through bolted to the trailer floor with 3D printed wing nuts to make...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

I think it is great you can offer both, that puts you in an interesting position vis à vis the competition. More choice is a good thing, covering two price points as well you can't go wrong. I have both. Using them within the spirit of the law: - the mid drive is staying in my round town hack...

    Number Two

All of those having trouble getting wired tyres onto 28" rims should have a go with 16" rims! There isn't much rubber to stretch that is for sure. My ugly duckling trailer that has been limping around with one bent steel rim almost since I got it is transformed with a shot of satin black paint...

How to get the best from your battery

The complete discharge was for a previous battery chemistry, it doesn't apply to Li-Ion. Maybe they didn't rewrite that part of the manual?

Insurance on a home build bike.

If you find an insurance company that gives away money please let us know! My bike is insured for the value of the parts and I am very pleased with that.

    I'm bent!

I have all the bits to make an electric trike of my own. A 3D printer - I want reasonable fittings not some hodge podge of bicycle fittings hacked to make them work on a trike. Marc of etrike fame is an aircraft mechanic so custom makes his parts from aluminium etc. PETG, raw and charged with...

    Number Two

I now have all the bits to electrify the trike which has it's own build thread so Number Two is back to being a round town, shopping and fishing bike. A new chain - climbing hills over 10% gradient daily has taken it's toll, a new Wippermann chain is arriving any minute now. The original chain...

    Interesting Electric bike

I made an interesting find myself on Sunday - an Azub Ti-Fly trike with trailer and windscreen thingy. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. It had some kind of hub motor kit on - it was parked in front of a house under a tarpaulin, the only part visible was the left front wheel and...

how drivers see you based on the clothes you wear.

Reflective vest is mandatory after sunset in France. Useless on a trike because one is lying on the reflective stripes... My jacket has reflective shoulders.

Adapt cheap lights to not blind oncoming traffic

The cutoff is in the mirror design on quality lights so blocking with tape will probably work, test with a bit of cardboard. You will have less light output of course.

    Battery percentage

36v is the average or median charge, cells are 3.7v or 3.6v nominative. When you charge to full they go up to 4.2v so 10 x 4.2 = 42v when full. Don't worry, the first 200 m or so will see charge drop to 41v where the discharge curve smooths out.

Help! Main roads or side roads?

Ride a trike, most cars stay well out of the way. You need to wear high viz just in case you do get run over, it gives your children's lawyer a better shot at getting more compensation money!

    battery percentage

My last batch of 18650 cells arrived from nkon charged to 3.68v so I guess that would be Samsung's storage voltage. All documentation provided with chargers and LiPo bricks says 3.85v per cell. Another place to check would be the cell manufacturers spec sheet, storage voltage is often mentioned...
