Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Contender for the year's slowest resto/conversion project? Besides the very real difficulties in finding suitable components, especially anything relating to wheels, every time I'm getting started something non bike-related derails me. Been making do with cleaning up components when I can grab...

New Tyres, Rear Cassette and Chain for my Conversion

I tend to go with KMC chains as always found them to last much longer than Shimano or SRAM. Just ordered two of the ‘Extremely Durable’ 9-speeds for the Ute as they’re absurdly tough, and cheap too. Be interesting to see how they hold up to the 750w TSDZ2

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Finally got round to stripping the frame properly and scraping back the paint around corroded bottle and mudguard bosses and deck-mounting-points. The BB got a twice daily squirt of WD40 for the last three days as had a hunch it wouldn't go without a fight and I was right. State of the cartridge...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Inclined to agree with you on that. I'm leaning towards fitting a controller housing on the back of the seat tube (plenty of space with a longtail) and running all wires up into that. Won't seal it but it should keep the worst off while still draining freely. Will also be a convenient place to...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

I was looking at those but as this is going to be a genuinely all-weather daily runabout I've decided I need better weather-resistance in general. Need to to do a bit more research but would welcome further suggestions

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Not managed to get stuck into this build yet but have spent a few minutes here and there offering up the battery pack and drive unit and considering how I want to run the wiring and keep things tidy. The bullet connectors from the battery pack need swapping out for something more durable and...

    Bicycle Alarm system?

It's a bunker in my head. In reality it's an over engineered timber shed with probably too much hardware and steel reinforcement holding it together. No lead lining but I've a nice tinfoil hat that's surprisingly effective ;) In all seriousness though, I've had issues with overheating battery...

    Bicycle Alarm system?

Face-palm moment. When I open the box tomorrow I'm hoping I'll find a VLCD5, so it should have a socket. Do you know if these are live all the time or only when the battery and system are switched on?

    Bicycle Alarm system?

Ha, great minds! I'd considered that but was convinced there must be a more elegant solution. I think it's the front runner for now though. Thanks again folks

Enviolo for a long-tail mid-drive cargo bike: advice on selection and required components

Thanks, that's really helpful input. Always useful to get people's real-world experiences, especially when things haven't gone to plan. Already got the TDSZ2 though I'm afraid (arrived today) and given the loads and use pattern I'm reasonably confident that's the right choice. According to...

Enviolo for a long-tail mid-drive cargo bike: advice on selection and required components

As described elsewhere I'm in the process of converting a Kona Ute long-tail cargo bike to mid-drive. As part of that I've been debating whether to: Refresh the existing 2x drivetrain with a wider range cassette to better deal with the reduced spread from the TDSZ2 42t up front, or Go with a...

    Bicycle Alarm system?

I've got a Rivet on mine (similar to Brooks B17) so should have space. The issue is that I'd have to remove it for charging as no power in the bike bunker.

    Bicycle Alarm system?

Thread resurrection alert! Has anyone got recent experience of the alarms mentioned earlier in this thread or the newer versions thereof? Or any recommended alternatives? I've got a couple of good chain locks for the e-cargo bike I'm building but the reality is that it will be left outside...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Absolutely a good idea at night as they help drivers gauge distance more than blinkies and don't dazzle as much. I'm likely to be riding this more in daylight hours though so could do with the extra visibility. Also, while I remember, if you're buying through Paypal and the seller lists in...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Thanks Gavin. May be a couple of weeks as need to strip the hubs and still looking for replacement brakes as the old Shimanos I was planning to use are too far gone. Also needs new pedals, grips, saddle, chain and possibly cassette as the teeth are starting to hook. Still debating wide-range...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Alice from PSWPower emailed back and advised that the cells used are: 'INR18650 MJ1 3500mAh'. On that basis, I've ordered the kit. Thanks again, I'm really grateful for all the advice. I'll try and remember to take pics of the build and post a build-log when I'm done.

I've emailed and Skyped them to see if they can clarify but nothing back yet. Will post any response I get so others can find the information if they need it.

Tongsheng TSDZ2 review and build tips.

Brilliant review @76zedfour , thank you. And great video @Electric Dream . I'm looking at precisely this pairing to fit to a long-tail cargo bike, hence need for the big battery. Do either of you happen to know which LG cells they've used in this pack? EDIT: PSWPower responded to my email and...
