Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Thanks, both I'm used to a wide-range cassette on my daily hack (42/10-42) so will be interesting to see how things work out. It's a long-cage Deore mech on it so reasonably certain it'd take a bigger cassette if needed. Reluctant to throw too much money at the drivetrain until I've decided on...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Wow! Winch territory. Will see how I get with 11-32/42 for a bit first. And sorry to labour the point but does anyone know what the quality is like with PSWPower's LG packs?

Any idea how small you can go with these? I think they come with 42t.

Got it, thanks. Regarding brakes, it's currently got BB5s which I've hated since they were first released so it'll get whatever half decent shimanos I can find with the biggest front rotor it'll take. Agreed, tyres definitely a consideration. I've got a pair of Schwalbe Marathon e-Plus for...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Ha, that's 160-190 fully loaded. That's with bike, rider, child, child seat, motor and battery totalling around 137-140kg. So any luggage on top of that... okay call it 165-170kg maxed out. Still quite a lump to stop even without extra luggage! And consider that the Ute is actually very light...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Great, thanks. Range is pretty important on this one as it really will be a car replacement a lot of the time so a bigger pack is definitely required. As for speed, really not interested for that very reason: I want to be able to stop 160-190kg of bike, rider, passenger and luggage in a safe...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Yes, I get that. And apologies, turns out it wasn't a bbshd but a bbs02, so not quite as pokey. Point being that I've experienced how they work but have no basis for comparison with the tsdz2. I'm certainly in the 'cyclists who'll pedal' camp, so I think the tsdz2 will suit me better. My main...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Thanks Gavin. I've ridden a BBSHD and it was fine, not tried a torque sensing unit - though I'm a strong cyclist without a motor - and unlikely to be able to try one as still semi-shielding until we can get antibody tests. I've got T1 diabetes and was very ill through Jan and Feb with textbook...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Can anyone advise if this pairing would be a suitable match to my use requirements, and whether the battery is likely to be any good? Also, am I better going for the 500w or 750w, considering my need is for torque, range and reliability rather than outright top speed? Drive unit: TDSZ2 48v...

Presta valves - Whats the point!

Was a long time ago but fairly certain they were too far gone to remove, which to be fair can also happen with presta but I've never bought presta tubes with non-removable cores. Other advantages with presta are that they'll hold higher pressures and getting the right valve length for your rims...

Presta valves - Whats the point!

I've had a few schrader valves fail while the tube was still good. With a decent presta tube you can replace the valve-core in seconds. Presta are also good for adding sealant to a tubeless setup without having to break the bead, as you can pull the core and inject directly into the valve-stem.

That would be good but should probably be another thread in its own right, otherwise things start morphing into other things - as I've already done with my Mongoose digression, sorry! - and content starts getting harder to find.

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Nice bike! Always had a soft spot for Spesh hardtails, my last being a 2001 Rockhopper A1 (+ lots more letters). Loved it. How're you getting on with the TSDZ? It's a cracking vid isn't it. I may try again at persuading them to bring a few in to test the market. I've nothing to do with the bike...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Got to ask: what did you build? Can definitely see the the appeal of a powered offroad long-tail but I'd be careful about trying to put too much power through the Ute. It's not just the less rigid frame to contend with but the 700c rims. The combination makes it flexy and tall, which is why the...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Hi Gavin, They’re hugely capable bikes but Kona prioritised weight (and cost) over stiffness, and went with relatively small alloy tubesets without any ovalisation or other forming that would have improved stiffness. The less rigid frame means they cant be loaded as heavily as something like...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Okay, thats a relief. Can I also ask what type of battery you had on your Ute? Was it a side-loading version, or did you find there was enough room in the frame for a slide-down type? And can you offer any other tips specific to fitting the TSDZ2 and suitable battery to the Ute?

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Thanks for that. Hard to say for certain from the pics but looks like the tsdz2 has quite a bit less ground clearance than the BBS. Is that the case? And have you had any issues with the housing rotating under load and hitting the downtube?

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

Don't suppose you've any pics of your Ute with the Tongsheng fitted? I'm keen to see how much ground clearance you lose at the BB. And regarding batteries, could you recommend a suitable pack/size that would accommodate the loads and distances I'll be covering, or is it a case of get what I...

Kona Ute mid-drive conversion: advice appreciated

That's good to know, thanks. Cue the barrage of questions in response: In what way is it a better fit? And how was the chainline? I'd prefer not to go any bigger than 42t, ideally 40 so wondering if that's doable on these? Also, am I right in thinking that you don't need a shift-sensor on...

Hi - considering a runabout for hilly town

Hello again, Re-introducing myself as this project got parked when I gave up trying to find suitable bikes to build from. Just bagged myself a mk2 Kona Ute and now ready to get started. I've just posted in the 'Conversion General Discussion' section so will be drawing on the collective...
