If i turn off the motor peddling is really hardwork.I was going down hill and it feels like im peddling up hill on a normal bike.Once i engage pas 1 the bike is then ok.Im trying to save battery.Is this normal for a bafang motor ?

I'm going to try making a rear hub E-bike, I have the frame which is an old specialised hard rock. Can I use just a single front gear and is there a way I can keep the chain from coming off. I know there is something but can't recall the name of it.
