There direct drive thought so for any given wattage results in lower torque. Still I'm sure its quality makes up for it. I'd only ever be interested in the motor but its a better deal for what is generally a very expensive kit.

Does sound like a fault with the battery. Usually getting a battery of any kind to read a voltage is simple. But usually when you apply load is the give away.
