I would always go for a D lock personally. Lugging them around in backpacks isn't fun(isn't great with any type of lock) if your bike will allow it then bungee cables around/over lock and pannier/battery/ect or any sort of holder so the bike takes the weight of the lock and not you. Not exactly sure where you heard that from, lots of shops are selling lots of black, some stuff is really hard not to buy in black(arm/leg warmers ect). Roadie uniform is pretty much black/red/white in that order. Not to mention if people are copying team colours then the past 2 tour de frances...
