Police asked me to stop using my bike!!! :( :( :(

Off-duty police officers do from time to time "have a word" without making an arrest. I have a friend who will occasionally flash his badge and give someone a bit of a ticking off. So it's not necessarily a good idea to challenge it, in case the threat is genuine. The two buckets tied up over...

Folding bike, 20", full suspension and integrated battery.

I've tried a Bafang hub and Bosch crank drives - the latter on more expensive bikes admittedly - and found the Bosch motors much more reliable. It's good to hear that Bafang have improved in the last couple of years, and last time I tried a hub drive (an Emotion Neo Cross) it was a very nice...

many thanks to everyone for their contributions

No worries, Richard :) If you're looking to improve your fitness: when you get a test-ride of anything, check that the bike has enough levels to suit your future needs. It is common to start off on a high assistance level, become a bit fitter, and then reduce the assistance as you can. Older...

many thanks to everyone for their contributions

Kalkhoff have a reputation for making fine bikes at a mid-to-high price point. However, the feedback you are after depends on what you want it for - what are your purchasing criteria? Overcoming a disability, improving your commute, leisure cycling, abandoning the car, exercise, reliability...

Do inner-tube widths need to match the tyre spec?

Yes, 30 psi is mainly for testing. It is also a result of the gauge on my track pump not being as reliable on Presta valves as it is for Schrader - I connect it, and it seems to register a value before gradually reducing. I had a tube blow up the other day whilst inflating it (it wasn't sitting...

Righto, Firefox/Ubuntu here. I'll check tomorrow to see if it works on a different browser/OS for me.

Do inner-tube widths need to match the tyre spec?

Yes, I have a Marathon plus on the back wheel of my Ave, replacing a Racing Ralph off-road tyre (pretty flimsy in my view). Marathons seem to be pretty much bullet-proof. My new KTM Macina has Rocket Ron off-road tyres, and these seem to be the same - sacrificing puncture resistance in order to...

    New bike for serious commuting

Very pleased you have something you are happy with. If you get a chance, please do write up a detailed review of your new bike and post it here (or anywhere on the web). One of the things I found difficult when getting started with e-bikes was finding reliable real-world reviews, especially...

    Forum link broken in header

I think that's an error. It's trying to go to http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/?p=376 which results in a page title of '404 Not Found'. It should always go to the home page of the forum, in my view. The links 'About' and 'Contact' seem to be similarly affected when on a forum page, but not when on the...

    E-bike research project

Ooh, that does sound nice. Me, I'm fond of Brighton, and hearing of e-rides along the promenade makes me want to take the bike down to the coast and get some sea air and a good view on the bike :)

Do inner-tube widths need to match the tyre spec?

Alright, thanks all - good to know!

    Forum link broken in header

This link is still broken, unfortunately. There are two cases to be considered: as it appears on the Home page (this is fixed) as it appears on forum pages (now missing the /forum/ address part, and just returns a 404)

Do inner-tube widths need to match the tyre spec?

I've recently purchased a KTM Macina Action 29 (and, as is my custom, I'll write a review article in due course, for interest and edification - broadly it gets a thumbs up!). I took it for some light off-road recently and acquired slow punctures in both wheels, probably caused by thorns; I...

    E-bike research project

Indeed. And, is there a time-saving too? In my last job, I could cycle to work in about 35 minutes, or take the two necessary buses and get there in 50-60 minutes.

    E-bike research project

Survey completed. However, the question about bike cost did not cater for e-bikes over £2K - and there's a fair few of those about these days. The question about 'reducing exercise' is an interesting one. If you ride the same distance twice, once on an e-bike and once on a conventional bike...

Extraenergy - Pedelec and E-Bike Magazine no. 9

Ha ha, they've reviewed a bike called the E!Legal - there's a name that doesn't translate as intended! I expect it has a hidden boost switch somewhere :D

    Performance figures database

Yes, which is why my suggestion is only a bike-component database, and not battery/distance performance. As Eddie says, weight and warranty can be added too - these are all non-falsifiable, since it'd all be publicly viewable.

    Electric bike blog spam?

Thanks TETS. Would you be so kind as to let us know the name of the firm that you engaged here? Not blaming you for it - I'm sure you were unaware how dodgy this firm turned out to be - but it's worth knowing why this is a thoroughly disreputable technique. The forum spam was sent from a...
