Indeed they are. I just tried to tin the contacts of a 6-pin mini-DIN cable connector from Maplins and managed to melt the plastic contact pin housing on only the second pin. That was using a fine soldering iron with the connector held by crocodile clips attached to PCB arms on the solder...
