    Sensorless speed controllers

I just checked the site in excitement but didn't see them. Do you mean the Crystalite pedal first ones? They're no good for a Tongxin as the freewheel means it won't generate the necessary back emf. If its something else could you post an exact link? Frank

2nd leg of Wai Won Ching's silk tour

Interesting, great trip! I've been wondering for the last six months if he was going to find the bikes still at the Ramada!

    Throttle modification

Very nice job, Ian; much neater than mine! Good idea to put something else over the actual throttle. I might have another go and try to get something nearer to your one.

    Emergency tyre repair

Yes - I've used them on motorbike tyres before and got a bike version, which I used when I had the puncture on my Wisper a few months ago. It enabled me to go the last 3 or 4 miles to work when I was in a hurry. It didn't fix it completely, and rendered the tube irreparable, but it got me to...

    Throttle modification

I've just carried out Flecc's throttle modification on my Wisper. Being somewhat ham-fisted with a hacksaw, it doesn't look quite as tidy as Flecc's, but it works ok and (my main objective) enables me to fit a bar end mirror. Frank

    My first Foldable elecric bike

Very good, Andy! Of course if you wanted just a bit more power you could always add a modification...

Dilemma with replacing my SLA batteries

Yes - good luck - let us know how you get on with it. According to the tracking system, mine flew in from China last night and is now with UK customs. Hope it is here before Friday as I'm planning a trip next weekend! Frank

    The British and bikes

I don't see it as harder to enforce than many other laws. Isn't the point of it to set out clearly what should and should not be done? I can imagine going up to my taxi driver and saying 'You came within 1.5 metres of me which is against the law' and it being a lot clearer cut than me...

    Sensorless speed controllers

I think she's pretty busy so emails don't always get answered (especially 'hard' ones). When she went quiet on me once I just called her mobile and got an answer. Frank

    Ebike Life

I bought a second hand Powabyke last year which was made in 2002. You see plenty of that vintage on eBay. Frank

    Sensorless speed controllers

I'm not aware of any ready made alternatives, although someone who was an electronics whizz could probably adapt an RC one to take 36v. However, Kraeuterbutter actually has Tongxin controllers - drop him a line and see if he has the type you need. If not he will probably offer to get them...

Next electric bike - illegal DIY!?

I agree with Jeremy that it is not wise to take a bike beyond its engineering limitations. Some of the more extreme creations on Endless Sphere with high powered motors and vast batteries to give them any sort of range have ceased being bikes and I would not want one of those. However I...

Poor battery life - suggestions please?

I agree, it sounds like the battery is not taking a full charge. That cutting in and out is what you get when the battery is nearly empty. I'm a reasonably fit cyclist and live in a flat area. I get 30+ miles range from a Powacycle NiMH battery - so if you are getting 20 there is...

    Chain Tensioner?

I don't quite understand what problem you're trying to solve, but to answer your question in the context of whether it would be a good idea to take a Kalkhoff on a variety of terrains, the answer would be 'no' - as electric bikes are road only; bumpy terrain is liable to damage battery mountings...

    How do Pedelec systems work?

Having checked the wiring diagram, I suspect the controller gets its speed information from the motor. There is a connection from one of the Hall sensor wires to the speed indicator - and no connection to it from the pedal sensor. In which case neither removing magnets nor changing gearing...

    How do Pedelec systems work?

Interesting thought... For those who aren't familiar with it, on the Wisper (mine at least) the pedelec gives assistance to around 15mph, although the throttle can give assistance to higher speeds. My ideal configuration would be to get the pedelec to give full throttle assistance. I...

    How do Pedelec systems work?

Wisper 905se and Powacycle Windsor. The Wisper is a good bit more powerful - faster on the flat as well as uphill. I've never ridden either up a steep hill but my wife felt the Wisper was almost as good a climber as a Powabyke when we were in the Kent / Sussex Downs the other weekend.

    How do Pedelec systems work?

Wisper, Powacycle and others I know of are like the old Ezee system - but there is no problem with excess power on start-up - perhaps because the motor is not as powerful. I only know of Powabyke which works like the new Ezee bikes. Personally, I don't like that system as you have to use...
