Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

These come highly recommended too : Michelin A3 Protek Max Tube | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com Ashamed to admit it took me 5 hours on Wednesday night to change 2 tyres and fit a pitlock. About four hours of that was trying to get the rear wheel (and that was on a crank drive)...

What is in that subconscious mind of yours?

I have both a crank drive and a decent gear range and it's still an exhausting effort to climb prolonged hills (a 1:7.5 is hardly an Alpine trail !) unless you drop down to pretty much a walking pace. Quite happy to do the pedalling but it would be nice when you're knackered after a 15-mile...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

The main lesson we have still not learned is that diversification and expansion of export markets is our only hope longer term to turn the situation we now find ourselves in around. Having free trade with Europe clearly hasn't been the answer and has come with a great many strings attached both...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

So really, the fact that UK doesn't want to be told what to do by Europe probably has some relevance to the domestic legislators' stance. But looking back to what happened over this as a guide to what "might" happen if UK introduces its own elective S-class legislation as Germany and Switzerland...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

Did Britain's regulations pre-date the EU's ? If they did, existing regulations were being changed as opposed to new ones being introduced with benchmarks already in place. Britain's conservatism over progressive developments does seem totally counter-productive. What it really needs is some...

Governments are full of hypocrites and sound bite-merchants pedalling populist myths. There is no real will to tackle car use - far too much money being made off fuel duties and VAT without which they would have to find some other way of raising money which would make them (even) more unpopular...

What is in that subconscious mind of yours?

I feel safer on my bike than some mopeds, but a good scooter capable of 70kph+ is perfectly OK as long as you're careful with the cornering and body position. Wouldn't want to ride a scooter like that if I hadn't sat a driving test and obtained a load of experience though. Not a fan of...

The biggest special measure deal for minorities in truth is to permit unregulated use of eBikes in the first place, is it not ? Special measure deals in one context but not in another. I'm not sure why you'd want to ride an "S-Pedelec" on stand-alone cycle lanes. Off-roading on converted MTBs...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

Obviously these arguments have been bought into by legislators and if that helps those who are genuinely capable of using independent means of transport safely and who would otherwise have their freedoms curtailed I can accept that the price paid by those who end up tangled in red tape at the...

Throttles and the other EU nations

Refusing to be fleeced any longer in relation to any of the above, have now stopped buying all three. No more booze or petrol as of September. No more fags as of 2 weeks ago and holding firm ... they finally killed the goose that lays the golden tax egg with me completely.

Throttles and the other EU nations

I think the power limitations are partly an attempt to force people on eBikes to behave like those on unassisted bikes and have to get off and walk up hills. I have virtually had to go into training to cope with some of the hills round these parts without ending up walking or stopping for a...

In practice some motors do deliver tail-off power between 15.5-17mph (the Impulse does in any case on Power mode), but the tail-off is sharp over a very small speed range and in consequence it is so weak as to be virtually meaningless in practice. I'm oblivious to what has clearly been a...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

I am not being funny, but if peoples' eyesight and reflexes are sufficiently good to cycle at 15mph then I am pretty sure they are good enough to cycle at 20mph. Being physically capable of cycling unassisted at 22mph as a 16 year-old does not mean you have road sense and reflexes commensurate...

    350W BMS Battery legality problem

That makes total sense to me. It's basically having an assistance restrictor in place and provided that this configuration is in place at the relevant time the bike is in use on the road, can't see how the bike could be successfully argued to be illegal on challenge if continuous output is 250W...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

I still don't buy it. I was on a moped in the Summer and rode that at 70kph without any difficulty in the Med, within the speed limit. With an appropriate licence and wearing an appropriate helmet. This is a very far cry from 18-20mph, which as I say is a speed many cyclists ride at anyway...

That is to take the view that it's a "needs-driven" decision to use an e-bike, not one of choice for the utility benifit, which is the reason I got one .. seeing as I gave up my gas-guzzling polluting car too. It seems that the perception of e-biking here is too focused on it being something to...

    Weather woes

Drivers driving like maniacs this afternoon in Gloucestershire cutting really close past me in rush hour just now and crazy gusts, headwinds and sidewinds nearly blowing my bike over (certainly making it impossible not to swerve slightly when hit by a side-gust). Ended up getting off the road...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

... and as per usual, the law is flawed as those faster cyclists on heavy bikes would like to maintain their speeds up steeper inclines (one of the key attractions of an unrestricted bike) without the effort factor going into sport training territory. That is all - surely not a lot to ask !!!
