Yes John, I retro fitted them in place of cable operated rim brakes. I think the cable brakes were better. For me though, disks are the only option. They are easier to set up, work better and don't chew up the wheel.

The cases are usually the same, so the mounting bolts should fit. The handlebar controller may be a problem though. I don't think they are interchangeable.

I'd think twice about those Magura rim brakes. They are like rim brakes only worse. Magura have managed to combine all the disadvantages of rim brakes with all the disadvantages hydraulics. I had them on my Pro Connect and they were dreadful. The caliper pistons stick giving uneven adjustment...

Sadly there is very little you can do to repair the Panasonic motor. My original stopped working and I replaced it with a new motor. Unless you can find a secondhand unit at reasonable cost, you have to weigh up if it's worth it. A new motor will cost in the region of £400...

How old is your bike? Which motor does it have fitted Panasonic / Impulse etc.

My 8 speed Alfine has been very reliable, but it's coupled to a 2008 and more recently, a 2011 Panasonic motor. What was 250 Watts back in 2011 doesn't seem to have harmed it, but I don't know how it would last if subjected to 2015's version of 250 Watts.

If you ride through any high street on a 29er or 700C wheeled bicycle, this is what the average person going about their business will see and perceive; Riding a bicycle with 26" wheels or smaller distorts people's perceptions and they will see this;

And to add even more..... It doesn't just stop at buying a 26" wheeled bicycle. You then need to buy oversized shoes, a rotating bow tie and a red nose because it looks like something that a clown would ride.

I've never been anywhere near one of these bikes, but my guess is that the wheels and tyres are the main contributors to the overall weight. Like you, I'm not keen on them and time will tell if they are a fashion item or if they have a place in the bike market.
