    Lithium-ion battery dangers

I think it's perhaps impossible to make an interesting historical claim or argument, like Flecc's, or yours, without it being one with which it's also entirely possible to legitimately disagree. The most interesting ones are sometimes the most controversial, and their being wrong in some aspect...

    Lithium-ion battery dangers

Thanks! Will this also be true of budget-basement chargers coming with the cheapest batteries?

    Lithium-ion battery dangers

Interesting - if as everyone is saying, charging is the nearest thing there is to a danger period, which amounts to a sort of heating-up of the battery, then at least two issues arise for me. Firstly, how long ought one to leave after switching off the charger before leaving the battery...

    Lithium-ion battery dangers

OK I feel a bit better, thanks. I'm grateful for all comments, including the point about fire retardant properties, and for the advice about attending while charging etc. I might just buy a barbecue for £10 to store the thing in indoors while I'm not in and while charging. I don't think it's...

    Lithium-ion battery dangers

Bumping this thread because I'm near to buying a battery to go with the two kits I've bought, and yet feel deeply worried about storing a L-ion battery in the flat while I'm sleeping or out. The tales I read of these things bursting into flame if they're ever dropped, or mis-constructed, etc...

    The Ultimate Road E-Bike

Something to get me across Europe - a bike which could be folded easily to fit in a car or bus boot or plane hold, it have a battery array capable of 100 miles a day, and be comfortable and carry panniers - and somehow resist all attempts at theft. Xiongda 2-speed or Bafang CST 250w, 20"-24"...

The beginning of the end.... already!

OK here's my reasoning. The mutual recognition rule requires non-harmonised goods approved and sold in one member state to be allowed to be marketed in another member state. Type-approval in one country is therefore type approval in all. This is one of the objects of the EU: to help business...

The beginning of the end.... already!

Pretty sure that type approval in one EU member state requires the other states to accept the product which has been approved - that's the famous Cassis de Dijon case.

The Complete EU Regulations on all e-bike types

Of course there doesn't currently seem to be a criminal offence of faking an en15xxx certificate (although I might be wrong)

The Complete EU Regulations on all e-bike types

Yes I wondered what it means for kits, but get the feeling that (thankfully in this case) there is so much legislative and enforcement inertia that I imagine we'll be ok for a few years and then there will be a little panic in government followed by some reasonable compromise arrangement...

Question re what conversion kit will allow slow-pedalling/give knees a rest

Looks like you were right Neal about them trying to fob me off - here's the reply just now. "Hello Sorry it was our mistake the LCD controller can fit the motor how about we refund the different cost to solve the problem?" o_O How about he [deleted] is the first thought! Definitely going to...

Question re what conversion kit will allow slow-pedalling/give knees a rest

Yes after my last post I thankfully got an email, inviting me to resend photos of the wrong motor, so I'm just being as nice as I can with the seller and hoping they feel really embarassed and want to help me. Thanks for your encouragement. Agreed re giving in, I just don't think I'd have...

Question re what conversion kit will allow slow-pedalling/give knees a rest

So the Chinese company which sold me the Bafang CST/BPM 250w kit for about US$260 ($423 including shipping and upgrades), and which I paid through Paypal, sent the $100 SWXK kit instead, which I've discovered on opening the package. Feeling pretty down about this. I did without a holiday this...

    Police crackdown on illegal e-bikes

Wow - yes I think you put your argument very well. I think the problem here, not just for you but for everyone (except specialist EU lawyers) is the difference between your rights (as implied by caselaw) and those expressed in statute. The important statute here is one which points BACK...

    Police crackdown on illegal e-bikes

I think your lack of confidence about the government enforcing UK court rulings does have a very good justification, but I think it arises from the UK's treatment of a different European area of law, that of the ECHR, with which we have a different relationship -we've dragged our feet e.g. on...

    Police crackdown on illegal e-bikes

I think that's a very good point. However. It's worth noting that in Germany, s-pedelecs (i.e. which do 15-30mph) are not allowed to use bicycle paths, but must use the road instead. So the authorities there share your views. It's not a case against the use of s-pedelecs so much as their use...
