Time to buy a new e-bike

The Sahel you are now thinking of has a hub gear, which is good. Less to get dirty - there's only one exposed cog at the back. More importantly for a small wheeled bike, the chain runs higher than a derailleur, so it get much less dirty. Less maintenance on a hub gear. To index the changes...

    Sahel compact or nano Brompton

Having a go on the Sahel is a good idea. As regards 'designed for the job', my AVE is a similar design and I've happily done 50 mile rides on it. Not quite as comfortable as my big wheeled bike, but there isn't a lot in it. The Sahel is more than capable of 12 miles each way, and however you...

    Sahel compact or nano Brompton

The Brompton is bumpy over potholes, although they are bomb proof bikes and will do the work. Lots of owners use them daily in London and other cities. But for 12 miles each way, I would go for the extra comfort of bigger wheels. The Sahel would be fine, but what about an AVE MH7? I mention...

    Sahel compact or nano Brompton

I find the ride of my Brompton Nano wearing over long distances. You've had a Brompton, so should have a good idea. One plus point is the weight of the battery in the front bag deadens the normally twitchy steering. Don't under-estimate the weight of the bike with the motor. The extra few...

    New bike for serious commuting

I would be wary of blobbing sealant on an ebike. All too easy to seal a drain hole but leave another water access point open, thereby making the job worse. Bosch describe their system as shower or splash proof, which I take to mean it's fine to ride in rain, avoiding any deep puddles. It may...

    Choices for 1st Pedelec...

Yes, it's the only way you could be sure. You could have a go on mine, although the journey from the smoke to the frozen North East might put you off that idea.

    Choices for 1st Pedelec...

I Surprisingly comfy. I don't like doing much more than 10 miles on the Brompton, but I've done a few 50 mile rides on the AVE. It is not as comfortable as my Rose 29er, but there's not a lot in it. My Rose has near-balloon Marathon Supreme tyres. I'm not sure what tyres will be on the...

Bosch challenge for the more technical among us

The walk is handy for me because I need to get the Rose over a couple of steps to reach where I store it. The 'speed' is dependent on the gear the bike is in - it is a crank drive, after all. One downside is the pedals creeping around under power which make them good shin scrapers. Easier for...

    Choices for 1st Pedelec...

Both the Kalkhoff and the AVE will do the job for you. But I would go for the AVE because it so much handier in traffic than a full size wheel bike.

Only 26 miles, but some were hard

I broke new ground today by taking the AVE to Consett in the car and setting off west on the C2C path. The path is up and down to start with, but soon settles into a long, steady climb to the cafe at Parkhead Station. A brisk headwind made it hard work, but worse was to come. As I discovered...

Anyone had an interesting ride recently ?

Eddie, Pleased you are getting some use and pleasure from the Haibike. The Bosch system, while not exciting, does give a nice relaxing and unobtrusive ride. In that respect, Bosch has succeeded in making it close to 'proper' cycling.

Cycling Gear in Aldi Sunday 04/05/14

I called in this morning - the section looked like a bomb had hit it. Not much left in, er, XL. I did get a pair of shorts which was my main aim, they look OK. Might have been tempted by a jacket if there were any.

How many people are using there e-bike off-road?

Ah, the joys of a newly fettled bike. About 15 years ago I had a Saracen mountain bike, paid about £400 for it so not bad quality, but far from top of the range. The gears started acting up a bit and I took it in to the shop to be looked at. Turned out I had a bit of float on the front chain...

Time to buy a new e-bike

Corpus, You've posted before about being underweight and not very strong, so you might find a full size ebike difficult to handle. There's no doubt my Rose 29" wheel bike is a handful compared to the AVE 20". Stopping, starting, negotiating obstructions when you need to get off, or even when...

    Bike for the Larger Rider?

The Woosh Big Bear may be too big for you at 5' 7" - others on here have and have ridden them so they might be able to expand on that. Forty spoke wheels seems overkill unless you are closer to 30 stone than 20. A reasonable quality 36 or even 32 spoke wheel should do the job. Ebikes are the...

    Bike for the Larger Rider?

Er, what do you mean by larger folks? If we are talking height, then no worries, but if we are also talking weight then go for the Agattu if you can afford it. Anyone, say, 20 stone plus is pushing the wheel strength envelope. Less chance of spokes breaking on the better quality bike.
