    police bikes?

Wisper supplied bikes to the boys in blue a couple of years ago. See the pic on their home page slide show: http://www.wisperbikes.com/Wisper-Home-Page.php

Cycling Gear in Aldi Sunday 04/05/14

I might get another pair of cycling underpants, which they call shorts. The Lidl/Aldi stuff is fairly good quality, excellent value and it lasts well for my weekend/hobby use. The more expensive brands might be worthwhile for someone who is on the bike every day.

Has anyone bought a new bike this year?

I am still pleased with this year's purchase, an old model AVE MH7. The Bosch drive is dull, but that also means there's nothing to annoy you so it's easy to live with in the long term. I've just started riding with a group of ordinary cyclists who do trips of between 25 and 60 or so miles...

Too many options in my mind, but... any good?

You got that right. The OP is looking to do six miles each way. A shorter list would be ebikes that couldn't do it.

New kalkhoff impulse endeavor 350 w.

That will be the Magura Transport Device. Also known as a bit of yellow plastic which you poke between the brake pads to stop them closing after you've taken a wheel out. You are right in thinking a bit of lolly stick or folded cereal packet would do the job just as well. Having said that...

    Tyres! yes,again;)

The Schwalbe Marathon Supremes on my 29er Rose are 2" wide. They have a very shallow tread and a domed profile so will roll faster than a 2" deeper treaded tyre.

    larger chainring for down hill

I don't fully understand gear inches, but have some experience of gearing from changing the sprocket and chain ring on the Rose. My observation is a couple of teeth - particularly on the front - doesn't make much difference. It depends what the OP is running at the moment. But changing, say...

ebike to keep up with road bike for 40 miles

Spokes can be a problem on hub drive bikes, but equally a properly built wheel will do the job. As with most things, the chances of you getting a quality item are improved the more you pay for it. I think there are more spoke problems with porky 20 stone plus blokes, so the relatively weight...

    Kudos sport on gumtree.. stolen?

Could be stolen, but the seller's other ads relate to a small computer repair business for which there is an address and mobile number: http://www.gumtree.com/p/business-services/computer-repairs-supportweb-design24-hrs-remote-support-on-computer-and-tablets/1057245680

ebike to keep up with road bike for 40 miles

Doc, Averaging 17mph over 40 miles is fast-ish club roadie pace, so you will take some keeping up with. Assistance on legal ebikes stops at about 15mph, and while the better ones have little pedal resistance from the motor above that speed, your wife will still be trying to propel a 25kg bike...

Happy commuter looking for electric assistance

Max, A Woosh bike is as good as you will get for your budget. They are excellent value, but bear in mind a top quality ebike is £2K or more. The total load - even with Rover - is not great, so the Woosh should bowl along quite well. One problem you will have is range. The Sant Ana has a...

    Who likes Crank-drives?

Chain wear is mostly due to the combined effects of dirt and lubrication, according to Sheldon Brown. Makes sense, he gives the example of enclosed chains which last forever. But Bosch crank drives are said to be hard on the drivetrain, so I remain confused. Perhaps it's the changes under...

    Weatherproof ?

I saw a few velos when I volunteered at a control for the London Edinburgh London audax. They were comfortably in the field with the other cyclists. Given a fit pilot, a velo is capable of keeping up a steady touring bicycle average pace.

Bike wanted for short fast commute

You say the commute has an 'unbelievable' number of traffic lights. Assuming you stop on red, any saving you could make would be wiped out by catching a couple of red lights. Trying to time this to the second is impossible and pointless anyway. Allow 10 minutes and buy any ebike you fancy.

Kalkhoff Endeavour Impulse S11 Alfine questions

Pardon my amnesia, and I'm not sure your theory works in practice. The chain ring will inevitably be the same one fitted to the 10 speed derailleur bike. I believe the Shimano hub sprockets are the same and take a 10-speed/single speed chain. It could be possible to slap a heavier duty chain...

    Complete Beginner

Saddle height on an ebike is more of a comfort/pain issue than a pedalling efficiency one. But I think comfort, pain and possible long term joint damage is at least as important, if not more so. The default position should be: 'Get the job right', not: 'Near enough is good enough'.

Samsung and LG entering the e-bike market

I have to manhandle the Rose over a couple of steps through two doors to get it to its parking space under the stairs. The walk feature does make that a bit easier. Regrettably, the walk feature also comes in handy when I conk out on that ruddy Iveston bank. Pushing a heavy ebike up a steep...

Kalkhoff Endeavour Impulse S11 Alfine questions

I have an Alfine 11 on the Rose and, as with most things cycling, there are things for and against. Hubs are neater and cleaner - the higher chain line also keeps the chain cleaner - the extra few cm above the road really makes a difference. Lower maintenance - there's just one cable to keep...

Kalkhoff Endeavour Impulse S11 Alfine questions

Bosch limit the power of their standard motor on Alfine 11 bikes to look after the hub. The Endeavour is not a Bosch bike, but I would be very wary of buying a Speed pedelec with a claimed 70nm of torque with an Alfine hub. There's a derailleur Endeavour which would be a safer - and cheaper - bet.
