    Advice on Commuter ebike

Cost per mile is irrelevant to me - ebiking is a hobby. A handful of my journeys would otherwise have been done by car, which gives me a nice warm feeling, but no more than that. Just as well I'm not bothered because 30/40 miles most weekends won't come to much more than 1,500 miles a year...

    Which Decathlon bike?

You do not need a mountain bike for your use, but nor do 90 per cent of mountain bike owners. The Riverside 7 would suit, and like most Decathlon bikes represents good value. If you do go for a mountain bike, get one that has road/trail orientated tyres - look for some with a fairly shallow...

Alexei Sayle on electric bikes in the Telegraph

They have had at least two very voluble dissatisfied customers, so this evens things out a bit.

    Gearing finally sorted

Thanks Alex. I think you are right about my riding style clashing with the Bosch software. The de-tuned Bosch drive for hubs must also play a part. I doubt I would have had any bother with a derailleur, extra grunt and first would have been lower anyway.

    BH Emotion serious problems

Hubs are good due to less maintenance, only one sprocket to get dirty and the higher chain line also keeps the chain cleaner. As I mentioned earlier, the Bosch crank drive is de-tuned for hubs, so if you want a hub something like a Panasonic would give more power - assuming they are not...

I've heard (am) worse, but you are still pushing it a bit. As d8 says, it would be possible to get a bomb proof wheel built, but finding the man to do it might not be easy.

A Koga reviewed by road cc

Good find, Stu. Fair play to the roadie reviewer, he obviously gets what ebikes are about.

    Nano brompton safety cutout

Another thought. Shemozzle's pic and probably the OP's bike has the new Brompton brake levers which are cantilevered a bit differently. They are much better than the old ones I have, but I wonder if they don't work so well with a cut out. Pure speculation on my part, I don't pretend to have...

Rider weight plays a big part. I won't say a lot more other than it was one of the reasons I bought a quality crank drive bike.

The little box is the controller. It should not get in the way of the fold, mine doesn't.

    Gearing finally sorted

First gear is still not that low in push bike terms. For example, a tourer will have a bottom gear which the rider can winch the bike up hill at 2/3mph. Lots of stuff online about the Alfine 11 having a first gear which is too high. Dawes withdrew one of their Alfine 11 bikes because they...

    Nano brompton safety cutout

Looks to me as if the in-line switch is part of the bit that's bolted to the underside of the lever. The cable goes straight to the little controller box which is fixed to the cross bar, next to the head tube. I would pull mine to bits, but I'm not confident the controller fixing could be remade.

Another vote for a crank drive for Paul. I have a Bosch and like it. Bear in mind the Bosch is de-tuned for hub gear installations, so you will get more grunt from a derailleur Bosch bike. If I recall correctly, max assist with a hub gear is 200%, but it's 250% for a derailleur. The...

Can anyone recommend a good bike for hill climbing and distance

Just true a couple of spokes and it should be fine.

    Seat post battery bike question.

I'm with Dave - not much practical difference in the handling of seatpost battery bikes. All I would add is they are a bit less wieldy, which makes them harder to get through trail obstacles such as kissing gates.

    Gearing finally sorted

Regular readers may recall I found first gear on my Alfine 11 Rose/Bosch bike too high. Spinning at a reasonable cadence gave more than 7mph - too fast for steep climbs. My first mod was to change the rear sprocket from 20t to 23t. This improved things, but not enough. I have now changed the...

Eighty kilos plus a laptop is nothing and should be carried easily by an ebike with a bit of quality. As trex says, there's no doubt the vast majority of spoke breaks are on rear hub motors. All the weight plus all the power is just too much for the rubbish wheels which even some ebikes which...

Latest progress on cell upgrade for Bosch battery.

Looks like the more popular down tube Bosch pattern battery has a minimum order of 10. I don't understand this alibaba stuff, so if one ordered 10 what would the final bill be delivered to a UK address? http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1634143121/Longer_service_life_36V_eletronic_bike.html
