    Dating in your 50s

I think we all become more set in our ways as we become older. For a single person, that means much less room in their life for anybody else. Such signals can be sent out without the single person realising it, but the prospective partner does.

    Greetings

Some bikes have a cut-out on both levers. If it's easy to do, you could still try disconnecting the one that is fitted - they are known for acting up.

    No more Jeremy?

Such a departure is known in forum-land as a 'flounce'. Doesn't bother me one way or the other. If he wants to post, great, if he doesn't, I'll not be losing any sleep over it.

    Greetings

I wonder if the brake cut-out is now operating all the time. Difficult to advise online, but Mafanwy may be able to see a thin electric cable going into the (bent) brake lever housing. Try disconnecting it.

    Hello From Scotland

Cold extremities - particularly feet - are a problem for most cyclists at this time of year. A cheap answer I've seen recommended a few times - but not tried - is to put a carrier or plastic bag over your socks and then put your shoes on. One might think your feet would end up a sweaty mess...

    New Woosh Crank-drive Bike

Crank drives are said to be good hill climbers, but that doesn't mean everybody needs one. A hub drive bike will also give you a lot of assistance on hills. Six miles is nothing on an ebike, so there are plenty that could suit you. Woosh are one of the better budget brands, Hatti from the...

£2,000 toy fund - but what to spend it on ?

dm, Not the full ride, but a few of us are aiming to do a stretch of the route near Consett in County Durham in April. I can't recall the thread, but funkylyn has been appointed chief whipper in and ride leader. No doubt more details will follow.

    Which saddle do you use?

Saddles are too personal to make a recommendation to another rider. If you fancy trying a Brooks, they make 'pre-aged' ones which don't need breaking in. BROOKS ENGLAND LTD. | TOURING+&+TREKKING | B17+S+AGED

    Wisper 906 Alpino Spokes

The rear spokes on the new Oxygen hub drive bikes are noticeably thicker than others I've seen. Certainly worth having a look/getting hold of one if you can, if only to compare with yours and give the wheel builder something to aim at.

    Rims & tyres - again !

It might skid in any circumstances, but it can not aquaplane. The tyres - whatever the tread - are way too narrow to build up the necessary bow wave of water. And in any event, not even Bradley Wiggins could cycle fast enough.

    Kalkhoff Panasonic Mods

Andy, Just to let you know Indalo might see your reply, but he won't be replying because he's banned. Well done on your first few rides - just the right approach, get the heart rate up a bit, but not so much as to turn you into a wheezing wreck. Equally, better to do three 10-mile rides than...

    Rims & tyres - again !

Another point to bear in mind is a bicycle cannot aquaplane. Thus on a hard unbroken surface, the best grip is from a slick, even in the wet. The tread on the Marathon Pluses - or any bike tyre - marginally reduces wet grip, but what it does do on something like a Plus Tour is provide grip on...

    Rims & tyres - again !

The wider the tyre, the less likely it is to puncture. Marathon Pluses are hard wearing, so unless you are doing thousands of miles a year on asphalt, there's not much point in worrying about it. But don't be tempted to run at too high pressure, mountain bike tyres don't like it and it can...

Can someone explain the Bosch system?

Thanks. Fewer levels sounds good, as does a thumb control for the main functions and start assist, which removes most of the need for a throttle.

Can someone explain the Bosch system?

Most people rate the Bosch system highly, but I'm baffled by the assistance levels. The linked document gives a table showing three levels and four modes, giving a choice of 12 settings. As an example, Speed 1, Tour 2, and Eco 3 are all within a few percent assistance-wise on the table...

    Convert or buy new

You could convert the Trek with a rear motor and keep the same gears. Either front or rear works well enough, unless you are going for lots of power when rear is better because of the strain on the dropouts - the front ones are weaker. Buying a decent bike already electrified is expensive, not...

Another throttle question to ask ????????

Thanks Jerry. I've had a look at the pics, not my area of expertise although I did once change the brushes on a Lucas dynamo. Or perhaps it was a starter motor - can't remember. I supervised (made the tea) during the installation of my Nano. Looked quite straightforward, the forks were...

Weather in Oz at the moment slightly variable

The cox of the Sunderland lifeboat told me the temperature of the North Sea varies very little through the year. In other words, your chances of dying of hypothermia if you fall in are about the same in July as they are in February.
