Maybe a thread for 5kw+ conversions?

There is currently very little work done in the area of high powered geared motors, may be worth looking into. I think that at over 1,200W (about twice the power of the BPM), the geared hub motors will become too brutally direct and powerful to control.

    Kudos Tornado, like new condition

final price £561. It may not be what you would have liked, but in view of the time of the year, I believe it's fair and you did the right thing. If you had waited a couple more months, the remaining warranty period would have been less, that would have affected the result.

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

it's kind of ironic isn't it that the most active cyclists are those who commute 20-30 miles a day, they do hell a lot more miles than the weekend lycra types and yet, our goverment would not want to see them as representatives of cycling - they'd rather see the lycras. The general attitude of...

    What type of cable!

you can use 12AWG or 14AWG silicon wires to connect the two batteries. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/14awg-Silicone-AWG-Wire-1m-2m-5m-Red-Black-/390991578774 a bit of cable conduit keeps it from rain...

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

the guy who is after a fast e-bike (e.g. cwah) wouldn't want to buy from Col anyway, Col loses nothing. The customer will most likely get an s-pedelec or do a conversion. Most people who buy e-bikes are pensioners buying for leisure ride or campers/caravanners. I reckon two thirds of them want a...

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

I'd hazard a guess that the uptake of dongles for Bosch bikes is very small. It's the medium/long distance commuters who are after higher speed to save time. They tend to go for conversions or Chinese.

Wondering if an e-bike is for me...

the running cost of a £2k commuting bike is not very low. For the first year (16 miles * 250 = 4,000 miles), you'll need to add dongle (£100), lock, mudguards, lights and bell (£100), puncture proof tyres and maintenance (£200) and depreciation (£1,200). Total £1,600. If you want low cost...

Wondering if an e-bike is for me...

with this bike? 25mph is doable, 30mph unlikely. You need 700W at the wheels (500W from motor + 200W from human) for 25mph, 1,100W for 30mph. That's before taking into account gradient and headwind.

    Would this convert to electric?

Very nice donor bike but it's not easy to find spokes for 24" wheels. For rear hub motor, you'd need 300 RPM rear motor with cassette adapter.

Breaking a bike chain using a chain tool?

you normally don't need to break your chain. The front derailler has a small cage bolt at the bottom. Undo it, open the cage - that's all you have to do.

Smart Pie 4 and NMC 24V 20Ah Battery

have you checked their motor performance curve? what' the efficiency at under 100 RPM? on a 26" bike, 100 RPM corresponds to 7.5mph, below 100 RPM, most of what you put in the motor turns to heat. DD motors are so inefficient at anything less than 150RPM that makes them totally unsuitable to...

Smart Pie 4 and NMC 24V 20Ah Battery

the sine wave controller has a slow power ramp and is limited to 18A, that means that you get at most 24V * 18A = 432W. In addition, DD motors are not good at low speed unless you throw 40A at them at start. Trust me, this combination is not going to be the best bike on the market. If your plan...
