@haase: can you explain the reason or reasons why you chose the Golden Motor's Smart Pie 4 and a 24V battery?

it's just a case that their marketing succeded beyond expectations. That is partly due to overselling but mostly due to the trust that the public has in large organisations 'too big to fail' so to speak. If anything, their campaign has an unexpected positive: there is a HUGE pent up demand for a...

The weakness of these gearboxes - used in almost all the Chinese CD kits, are the dimensional acuracy and long term stability of the gearbox shell. The other problem with a CD build is the bottom bracket weld. Is it strong enough against the awesome power of the kv120?

Hill climbing - 20 inch wheels better?

if you have to take 4 bikes on holiday, get two 20" e-folders and two normal cycles. The two e-folders can easily go inside the car. E-folders tend to have the 8-Fun SWX motor, not very strong but the smaller wheels compensate for that, they climb 10% hills OK, maximum speed around 15mph. For a...

the published efficiency curve is so flat - about 90% all the way, suggests that the heat problem is not big. So you have to ventilate 500W-1.5KW from that motor. It may need some sort of shielding to stop your legs coming into contact. The wind should take care of that much heat and a fan could...

    Making a lightbulb discharger

that's fine for low power discharge. For high power discharge, the battery when full outputs 54V, may blow your 48V-50V bulbs. I guess you have to try to see how it goes. So, buy one pack. 100W / 50V = 2A The inrush current can be twice (4A each) as high as the steady current going through the...

    Kudos Tornado, like new condition

it's not the season for bikes - you may have to put it on ebay auctions with a low reserve like £400 to generate interest. If it sells before, you can always cancel the ebay auction at anytime.

the way I see it, oil cooling is the Achilles heel of high power direct drive motors. It increases drag when you pedal unpowered. The most powerful geared hub motors only clock up 1kw. I wonder if oil cooled crank drive is a better solution.

    Making a lightbulb discharger

you still make a bar heater with that wire and would need a ceramic rod and a barbecue to keep that wire from burning the house down.

    Making a lightbulb discharger

you'd need the FYD10-H for that. It's very difficult to do a controlled discharge with light bulbs. You double the number of bulbs to halve the Amps and you have to keep an eye on the watt meter. The nearest solution is a 2KW electric bar heater with battery croccodile clips. You move the clip up...

that's a nice weight for a near silent bike, definitely bike, not motorbike. Yours is a reference design for high power ebikes. I am pretty sure that if you limit the speed, it could be made street legal because it does not look overly powerful, would suit London commuters. If it's fitted with a...

    Making a lightbulb discharger

you need a discharge current around 4A. The light bulbs with that range of current are 12V 50W halogen bulbs. divide your battery voltage by 12V, that will be 4 bulbs (3 not enough, the inrush current may damage your bulbs) for the 36V battery and 5 bulbs for the 48V battery. Put these bulbs in...

the Copenhagen wheel project did start very well with a lot of publicity in 2013 but suffered a lot of delay. https://www.superpedestrian.com/ To be fair, most projects succeeded to the general satisfaction of their backers. Don't back the project because you want to buy a cheap bike though.

this comment is not aimed specifically at the Storm bike but at projects on Kickstarter. 1) Kickstarter is not a store. They say so here: https://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/backer questions Basically, if you don't get what you thought you are going to get, take it out with the project...
