**WINNER!** Barclays TakeOneSmallStep.co.uk (Stephen Britt) - Power Assistance Kits

The fact that the battery can't store any useful energy and the whole principle of operation is mechanically flawed aside, they aren't a bad idea. I'm currently working on a system which is powered entirely by Fair Trade Trousers and Brizillian Peace Crisps for the 2011 entry. You might want...

    Voltage Tester @ Aldi Thursday

Thanks for the reminder about these. Coincidently, I will be needing one of these next weekend.

Just had my first RTA on my bike

I think this rule is aimed at two types of driver: The first bring the one who puts himself and others in danger by making a reckless attempt to overtake He then puts himself into a situation whereby he will have a head-on collision unless you slow down to let him past. The second is the...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

Is that what the Highway Code says NRG? I've not got access to a copy to look it up at the moment. It sounds like a gentlemanly solution, but a complete nightmare to establish who was in the wrong if there is a coming together.

Just had my first RTA on my bike

There is such a junction close to where I live. It's called Balloon Woods and some may know it. When travelling from Nottingham towards Ilkeston, the road actually divides into three lanes at the traffic lights. Those going straight on at the lights start off in clearly defined lanes, once...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

Except there is no left and right hand lane if there is no carriageway divider. If there is no carriageway divider, then it is a single carriageway road. The fact that drivers can fit two cars abreast on one carriageway makes no difference. The car occupying the space on the single carriageway...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

If there is just a central dividing line, then the road is a single carriageway. It doesn't matter how wide each of the single carriageways are, unless there is a line to split them into 2 or 3 lanes, they are single carriageways and the appropriate legislation applies. The fact that you can...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

Onmebike, I think that we agree regarding the original scenario. I'm still not sure about the dual carriageway bit though. In reality, I don't know enough about the layout ofvthe road at that particular location to pass comment.

Just had my first RTA on my bike

The outside lane does not have priority when a dual carriageway ends and becomes a single carriageway. I've tried to explain this but you seem to be unwilling or unable to understand it. You seem to be the anecdotal driver quoted in the horror stories you tend to hear on driving courses. Not...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

In answer to your question Onmebike. Where a dual carriageway ends and returns to a single carriageway, it is the driver in the right hand lane who is responsible for adjusting his speed to that of the slower moving vehicles in the left hand lane and then finding a safe gap to blend into that...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

I can only think that we may be talking at slightly cross purposes. If we are considering a dual carriageway and cars are parked in the left hand lane, forcing slower cars into the right hand lane, then I think you are right in what you / the highway code says. However, on a single carriageway...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

I think our posts crossed onmebike. I hadn't seen your update after viewing the photograph. I still can't agree with your thoughts on slow moving traffic having to give way to faster traffic on the approach to a parked vehicle. You can't just force slow movers into the gutter and make them...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

No lane changing took place onmebike. That is an entirely different situation covered by different rules. You seem to be suggesting that any slow moving vehicle should in someway come to a halt behind a line of parked cars in order to give way to faster moving traffic. Only once all the...

Just had my first RTA on my bike

Asserting your presence on the road seems to have very little margin for error. From what I read of other peoples experiences, being too passive on the road can be just as dangerous as aggressive cycling. Striking the correct balance is the difficult part.

Just had my first RTA on my bike

I think the key point here is that he didn't change lane into the path of a faster moving vehicle. It sounds like the car driver attempted a double overtake manoeuvre (cycle and parked car) and didn't pull it off. Unfortunately, it was the cyclist who suffered the consequences. I always try...

    Be Careful Out There

I'm sure that you are entirely correct about the driver not having intent to kill. The fact is, these people go into aresehole mode once behind the wheel of a car. It's in their make up. It's what they are like. The only way to protect the public is to put them in a place where they can do no...

    Be Careful Out There

No one said that he was guilty of driving dangerously. I was responding to the scenario whereby he is actual to blame for the accident and the fact that he has been arrested is sufficient to deter him from doing it again. It was you who proposed this scenario when you said; " if he is to...

    Be Careful Out There

I can't work out the logic here. Are you actually saying that the process of being arrested, interviewed and then released on bail, will be sufficient deterrent to prevent the person from doing it again?

The Recyling Cycle Of Gadgets & Thoughts

The pedals can be dismissed. The man clearly has mental health issues and is in need of sympathy and understanding, not cash. Unfortunately, the bank didn't spot this and filled his pockets with our money.

    Electric bike choices?

Some of the modern mopeds are quiet and they don't smell too bad either. If the cost puts you off, just wait until the battery on the ebike is knackered. Which it will be, in less time than you were anticipating!
