Thanks for the info. I find Aldi gear very good. I bought my last lot in 2008, use it daily through the winter and it still hasn't fallen to pieces. I'm sure it will last this coming winter too.

I've not had time to look at the numbers, but I wonder why you would want to do this. The cost of the equipment would be a good deal more than any savings made. It is difficult to see what can be achieved.

I can't really summon up any enthusiasm for this battery. I hope that I am wrong, but I suspect that they will kick the ar$e out of it when it comes to setting the price. Thereby, again, snuffing out the appeal of the ebike to a wider market.

Maybe. Unless I've missed something, I don't recall hearing much about the un-reliability of the Alfine gear system on here. Perhaps when used under extreme conditions such as those you describe, it exposes weaknesses.
