    Wired bike lights

Dare I disagree? The hub dynamo is simplicity itself, a self contained highly reliable unit, needing just two wires to a front bulb and two just more to the rear. Will work for 60+ years. Less drag than from the bottle dynamo sets , which are a friçtion drive and wear the sidewall of the...

    Hub Dynamo

The maths are against it.. the energy in a moving thing is 0.5mass x speed^2. Now a bike with s person on board, is 100kg max, the speed is say 30km.hr or 10 m .s . A car will be 20 times heavier and travelling at 3 times the speed, so stopping will give 180 times more energy. The biggest...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Just two short points.. the attributes attributed to Labour are those from their opponents, so may be lacking in objectivity. The article refers in disparaging tones about the "establishment. " , Correct me if I am being naïve, but would not the organisation running the government not be called...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

In the long run, we are all dead and western society gone,. We live in the now and the near future. Politicans have a 4 year horizon, Building societies and solicitors a 20 year one, civil engineers a 100 years and US businesses a quarterly year one... So which long term are you referring to..

    supercapacitors + battery

Its not a rant, but there are very large different chemistries at play. The classic lead acid battery has been going on for 120 + years and is optimised for particular uses. There is a world of difference between the battery you have in a car, where the need is to have an enormous surface...

Is an electric bike for me?

You have come to the wrong place for a critical appraisal of the demerits for e biking. A 10 mile undulating trip should take 45 to 50 minutes at the legal 15 miles per hour. You will get up to that speed and be able to maintain it even going up hill, down hill you can maybe double it... I...

    Hub Dynamo

I hate to disagree with d8vh, but I have a different take on it. A hub dynamo is an excellent way of powering lamps on a bike . Very much a set and forget product. With leds there is nothing to wear out and there is reliable light forever. Of course he is correct there is a power loss...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

We are way way off topic, which is was brexit and its ramifications. I would however disagree with you to an extent . some state enterprises are excellent provided they dont get above their station as it were, and if they are kept isolated from party politics. It is perhaps a derided term, but...

    supercapacitors + battery

Unfortunately capacitors in series obey a different law. 1/ctot= 1/c1 + 1/c2 + 1/c3 etc.... So your 6 of 500 farads would be 1/ctot = 6/500 or ctot 500/6 or 90 farads... Not what you wanted!. But the total voltage difference allowed accross the stack is the sum of the voltages in this case...

    Wired bike lights

According to venerable Wikipedia, french law requires bikes to be sold with wired lights and german law with dynamo sets. However even the swiss as well as the germans appear to be lax , with 40%+ non compliance by cyclists. What consitutes legal lighting appears to be down to national...

A slightly more authorative report would be available from .... Statistics on Alcohol, England, 2017 - NHS Digital https://digital.nhs.uk › PUB23940 I would agree that misleading statistics and shock horror head lines are in nobodies favour.

    Wired bike lights

I agree, life is to short to have to worry about yet another thing.. Apparently the every early cars used paraffin lamps with wicks and all.. your chauffeur would have dealt with that class of thing. . . If the lighting set could be economically powered from the battery pack , that is a...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Perhaps you would like to identify the point you are seeking to make. I am puzzled . As the UK has some 73 seats, or 10% of the European parliament, .. and was if anything over represented as it has a population of 8.8% of the eu, , something has to be done with what otherwise become "...

In my case, the repayments went up to I think 12.5% , and the property being outside of a city was less at 20K, was just 4 times salary.... And of course we were without carpet for 1 year, furniture was on a needs basis, often hand me downs. . But the big difference now is that there is a...

Perhaps you should look to the comparative statistics between Canada and the USA, in terms of health care before making such sweeping statements. Infant and perinatal deaths in particular, are a very good measure of the performance of a health system..

You do have a point, up to a point.. every adult is responsible for their own health and safety, AND has a duty of care towards others. When you assume responsibility for managing others , you also assume responsibility for their H&S. Why because they are no longer free agents, They are...

    Anti theft devices

I always take off the intuvia display and usually use the built in wheellock. When planning to leave it for longer or out if sight, i would use a cable chain lock also around some immovable object. Removing the display is now muscle memory.
