E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

I'm amazed they have one, he must be a very lonely man with no-one there listening to him: See this video of alternative cycling there .

UK - legality of thumb-throttles in DIY conversions

That was me, it shows what cycling should be like here in Britain if it's ever to become popular with the majority, rather than something done by only 3% of the population. Here it is again, showing how friendly and adaptable cycling as transport can be if public attitudes change and our...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

And there was me thinking the driver just wanted to go the pretty way for a change. :( .

No, the fast moving commuting groups have often been referred to as the peleton in the media, and in here a few times, so it's valid to say that since it very accurately describes the scene. We aren't speaking of kids but adult besuited office workers. For every occasion when someone might...

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

I think that's the choice, either unfairly financed cover or no insurance compulsion. I prefer the latter, the less law the better for cycling. .

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

But the elephant in the room is that if compulsory it means registration and number plates, otherwise it couldn't be policed. That on all bicycles is hardly acceptable and why almost everywhere it's been tried it's subsequently been dropped. A more viable alternative is a compensation fund...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

With both enacted it could be 3 years. Add 16 and 17 year olds as well and it could be 2 years. .

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

I repeat, scare story. It will never happen. Even before it can go the member countries for agreement it has to get through the European Parliament, and they are distinctly liberal where pedelecs are concerned. For example that parliament recommended to the EU Commission that all pedelec...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

I think Rees Mogg and co. know that, probably why they've agreed to cabinet policy consenting to a customs union during the transition period if necessary. It's the first real sign of them fearing the consequences of their extreme view on Brexit. .

Indeed it's largely flat but in an e-bike context that doesn't matter much. Their adoption of pedelecs is the largest proportionally in the world, a third of a million a year sold into a population only a little over a quarter of ours. There's nothing stopping us doing similar. Their common...

UK - legality of thumb-throttles in DIY conversions

It definitely is a bad thing, precisely because it puts so many off attempting to cycle. They see the "peleton" belting along, 20 mph or more with big effort going in and many know they couldn't possibly do that. (Also see below) No, it's economics that's been the real growth stimulus. The...

Yes, that is the walk alongside mode which can operate at up to 4 mph in the UK. It's for walking an e-bike up a hill too steep to cycle. On the continent it's 6 kph (3.7 mph). .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

Ted I have an exact parallel to this. A traffic officer in one of London's two police forces investigating an accident in which a 250 watt pedelec was involved commenced a prosecution on the basis that the law said 200 watts was the maximum rating. He was absolutely within his rights, that was...

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

It's sad that we are leaving the EU so leaving any chance of their help, but one can still go to the European Courts. Under the EU constitution, every member citizen has the right to enjoy every benefit that other EU citizens enjoy. Obviously this has limitations, but it is a lever. .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

I personally woudn't be too suspicious, compliance was a pretty strong word in this context, as near as could be to an order to ignore the law. The Chief Constable isn't entirely without power if an officer attempts to prosecute, he can rule that a caution to the "offender" is appropriate...

E-bikes declared illegal to use on European roads without insurance

:D. As I posted I smiled, knowing that someone would respond like this. An absolute menace, just like e-bikes showing up superfit lycras on hills! All in the eye of the beholder. :) .

That sort of thinking would ban mobility vehicles, "if you can't walk you shouldn't be allowed on the pavements". .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

While true, that only applies to the rules on the vehicles, e.g. type approval, not the usage. Usage is ruled on by member states, so the EU cannot overrule N.I. treating pedelecs as motorcycles. Neither can the UK since transport is devolved, though they could strongly influence. .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

You can get back on without any of the motor vehicle nonsense, the letter approved by your Chief Constable making it clear that e-bikers riding sensibly should not be bothered by his officers, who are being informed for their compliance, his word. .
